Many of the world's religions and spiritual philosophies and theologies can be found in Hawaii. Most mainstream American churches have religious services in Hawaii and people seeking most Asian spiritual services have no trouble finding them in Hawaii; however, Hawaii is one of the least Jewish places on earth, although Governor Linda Lingle is Jewish. Shuls, Jewish theology and philosophy are in short supply in Hawaii compared to many other places on the planet. As a result, the Hawaiian Jewish Community is small and Jewish Hawaiians are a very small percentage of the population. There are approximately 7,000 Jews in Hawaii which has a population of roughly 1,300,000 people - making Jews .0054% of the population of Hawaii! Hawaiian Jews and Hawaiian Jewish Communities are often separated by the Pacific Ocean and sometimes have little contact with one another. There are no Orthodox synagogues (synagogs, i.e. shuls) or Conservative synagogues (synagogs) in Hawaii (with the exception of Beit Shalom Synagogue on Maui - see links below) although Orthodox Services are held on Oahu at 10:00 AM (Shabbos only) at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel (808) 949-3911 at 444 Niu Street between Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Wai boulevard in the Waikiki district of Honolulu, Island of Oahu. The Conservative Congregation Sof Ma'arav has Torah Discussion Groups at 9:00 AM at the Temple Emanu-El Library and Sabbath Services Saturday at 10:00 AM at 2500 Pali Highway, Honolulu. There are Reform services at Temple Emanu-El at 2550 Pali Highway in Honolulu (808) 595-7521. The Aloha Jewish Chapel, located inside the Makalapa Gate across from Makalapa Medical Clinic at Pearl Harbor Navy Base, Hawaii is a free-standing, Jewish Chapel for all Jewish military personnel. There are no kosher restaurants or kosher markets in Hawaii, however, kosher meals may be obtained at "Legends" in Chinatown. "Legends" should not be confused with "Legends Seafood" which is nearby. "Legends" is a vegetarian restaurant located in the Chinese Cultural Plaza at 100 Beretania Street, #109 and can be reached at: (808) 532-8218 and they have takeout food as well as dining on the premises. Only three delicatessens in Hawaii import kosher food, but one of them uses the same knives to cut kosher meats as they use for cheeses and non-kosher meats, so it isn't really a kosher deli. Oahu Kosher and Chef Yudi Weinbaum brings his award winning kosher cuisine to Hawaii, he offers fully prepared meals and kosher catering for the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. Below you'll find a link to the Jewish Congregation of Maui, Beit Shalom Synagogue, at 634 Aulike Street in Kihei on Maui where the services at 6:30 PM on Fridays and and 10:00 AM on Saturdays range in styles according to who is present and/or leading. Rabbi David Glickman is Modern Orthodox, however, he stresses that Beit Shalom offers open invitations to Jews from all backgrounds - from all the movements, observance levels and practices of Judaism. It is of interest to note that many people misspell Hawaii as Hawaai, Hawai, Howaii or Hawii and Hawaiian as Hawaain, Hawian, Hawaian, Hawaiaan, Hawiian, Hawiin, Hawain, Haiwain and Hawaiin and, of course, their own languages and creoles (pidgins) such as langue Hawaiienne and Hawaiien.
