Volcanoes National Park and 22 world class optical telescopes atop 13,700 foot Mauna Kea. Information about many coffee plantations, macadamia nut farms, ample fishing, diving and other water sports. White sand beaches, black sand beaches, green sand beaches as well as breathtaking scenery on the Big Island of Hawaii.

NORTHWESTERN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS

To explore the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, click here. The Leeward Hawaiian Islands comprise the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument formerly called the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, the largest marine nature preserve in the world. On June 15, 2006, President George W. Bush signed Presidential Proclamation 8031 that created the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. On March 2, 2007, it was renamed "Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument". The monument is managed by the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in close coordination with the State of Hawaii.

The area where the sainted Father Damien did his work is now Kalaupapa National Historical Park, founded in 1980, it is part of the National Park System. The park is within the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a national historic landmark. A section of the park is included within the North Shore Cliffs National Natural Landmark. The nearby Molokai Lighthouse is listed separately in the national register.

To read the captivating history of Joseph (Jozef) de Veuster who went by the nickname "Jef" and was known to the world as Father Damien, and now as St. Damien de Veuster, click here. Father Damien gained world renown for caring for the victims of leprosy at the leper colonies at Kalawao and Kalaupapa on the Island of Molokai in the late 1800s before Hawaii was part of the United States of America.
