Mako Means Shark in Hawaiian
The Sharks of Hawaii
Mako means "shark" in Hawaiian. Another Hawaiian word for shark is "mano" for various kinds of sharks, such as mano kihikihi for hammerhead sharks. General information about the forty plus species of sharks in Hawaiian waters who pose little threat to human beings. The sharks that have posed the most hazards in Hawaii have been the galapagos sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, gray reef sharks and tiger sharks. While great white sharks can be dangerous, they do not frequent Hawaiian waters in great numbers because of their feeding habits. For more info about which shark species are the most aggressive and the most dangerous, more photographs, fascinating facts, shark research, safety tips, suggested reading and links to more shark websites, click, here.

Powers of Ten
Powers of 10 is and excellent illustration of exponential increments. View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space toward the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons. NORTHWESTERN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

The Leeward Islands or Northwestern Islands of Hawaii, consist of 130 islands, islets and shoals that stretch 1,200 miles northwest from Kauai ending with Kure Atoll about 55 miles west of Midway Atoll - site of the historic World War II naval battle between the American and the Japanese navies. The population of the Northwestern Islands varies between 100 and 250 depending on the number of scientific expeditions and explorations underway at any given time. There are no truly permanent inhabitants of any of the islands, as most are scientists of various kinds experimenting and gathering information, particularly regarding ecological, marine and biological studies. Usually there are 40 to 100 semi-permanent residents at Midway. On this page you will find maps and photos of each of the groups of islands, islets and shoals as well as photos of coral, birds, fish, turtles, sharks, seals and other sea life. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the wildlife in this portion of the Hawaiian archipelago are unique and can be found nowhere else on earth. Seventy percent of the Coral in the United States lies in Northwestern Hawaii. The Leeward Hawaiian Islands comprise the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument formerly called the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, the largest marine preserve in the world.
