The Leeward Islands or Northwestern Islands of Hawaii, 130 islands, islets and shoals stretch 1,200 miles northwest of Kauai and Niihau ending with Kure Atoll about 55 miles west of Midway Atoll - site of the historic World War II naval battle between the American and Japanese navies: the Battle of Midway. The Northwestern Islands of Hawaii are second largest nature preserve in the world and Kure is the northernmost coral atoll on earth. The entire area is now known as Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument which was formerly the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument.
