Many Japanese eat "Christmas cakes" at Christmas parties and at home on the eve of Christmas. Selling them is big business. There is no religious background.

Osechi is foods Japanese eat during new years holiday. Nowadays, especialy in urban area, busy people just buy packages prepared by professionals. This combo, which was sold in a department store in Yokohama city, cost you 100,000 yen and it had been sold out.
Maruoka-jo Castle Sep. 1999
The Castle tower of Maruoka-jo in the town of Maruoka, Fukui Prefecture. This castle was originally built late 16th century. It was a model of the third son's castle in the movie, "RAN" by Kurosawa.
Childrens day May, 2000
May 5th is Childrens day/ Tango no Sekku. Mr. Colonel Sanders celebrates it with Samurai-armor on infront of KFC restaurant in Yokohama.

"DRINK VIKING"? "ALL YOU CAN BE SOFT DRINKS"?? This sign is on a wall of a Chinese restaurant. What the sign trys to mean is "free refill"

This is the train schedule at Toranomon station of Tokyo Subway. During rush hour you need to wate merely two minutes to catch next train.
Sushi July 2000
Sushi is one of most popular Japanese food. But unfortunately it is kind of expensive. So somebody invented this "Rotating Sushi" system. Sushi plates are on the conveyer and rotating along the bar. You just pick up the plates you like and later waters/watresses will count the number of plates you eat. This system made the cost to eat sushi cheaper and it is very popular in Japan.

It was rare to find Hollywood stars in ads in the U.S. But it is common to find them here in Japan. This Hollywood star is in an ad for a language school posted in a comuter train.
