Coffman - Ice Climbing 2006 Page
The winter of 2005-2006 ended up being a great ice climbing season,
which is unusual considering how warm most of the winter was.
December started off very cold and Kerry climbed for two days in the
Daks (Keene Valley, NY area) and one day the Catskills.
Thus, it was looking great. Then in January the warm weather
hit. Fortunately, the Daks was one of the few places on the East
Coast that had ice. As it turns out Kerry was able to get up for
a two day trip in late January, and then again in February.
Finally, he was able to get to the Catskills in March for one final day
of ice climbing. You can click on the below links or one the
pictures to get to a detailed description of each of these trips.

Climbing in the Daks in December of 2005.
This was a great trip, with the highlight being our doing PT (at
Poko). It involved spin-drift avalanches and a lot of great
climbing. In the below picture you can see Ian working his way
through the deep snow to reach the start of the climb. Also, you
can see Kerry in a little "cave" during one of the upper pitches.

This was a one day trip up to Stony Clove in the Catskills. This
was the first time I climbed in my new leather climbing boots (Sportiva
Nepal Evos), and they are great! Below you can see Kerry on a
couple of climbs (including the Entertainer).

This was another two day trip up to the Adirondacks, with some great
(albeit wet) climbing. Below is a shot of Chouinard's Gully from
the trip.

This was another great two day trip up to Keene Valley. Below is
a shot from this trip that shows Kerry climbing Rhiannon at Chapel Pond.

Below are a couple of pictures from the one day trip up to the
Catskills. The first picture shows on of the amphitheaters about
mid-way up Buttermilk Falls,
while the other picture shows Kerry doing one of the many rappels on
Buttermilks Falls.
