"Welcome to Independence" The city council approved a propsal to build a new 5,800 seat arena that would serve as home to a CHL team. A hockey team could start playing in the new arena by October 2009, if everything goes according to plan.
The council will need to approve a community improvement district. This would require a half-cent sales tax levied within that district for the next 30 years. The boundaries of the district have yet to be drawn, but it's expected the district will encompass the I-70/291 commercial area. Also, a majority of property owners in that district would have to agree to participate before the tax could take effect.
The council is expected to consider the district proposal in September. The final details of the project, including building design could be considered in October.

Here's some information on when Independence began discussing the possibility of an arena and a CHL team. (The information comes from the city council agenda, so it does not give any details as to what was said.) for a full copy go to http://www.ci.independence.mo.us/agendas/CouncilAgenda/20070716%20-%20Council%20Action.pdf.
