I Wonder

Short story by Jessica Hardy, age 8 1/2

I, Tiger, was lying on the grass looking at the stars with my best bud Cooper. I said to Cooper, "I wonder what it would be like to be a human. "Nah, you don’t want to be one of those two-legged things," Cooper said. "Sorry Cooper, I have to go home," I said. "Bye." That night I kept wondering what it would be like to be a human. I did not sleep well that night.

The next morning I went to Cooper's house. I asked him if he wanted to play, but he said he was too busy. So I went to pick some flowers in the park. I saw three humans there.

They were playing with a disk. What did Cooper say it was called again? Oh yeah I think it was a Fresbye. Who cares.

I wonder what it would be like to walk on two feet that would make me tall. I think I’ll try. I stood for ten seconds, then OUCH! I fell. Oh well, still a good record. Cooper doesn’t like humans. He doesn’t want any part of them but I think they're cool. I really wish Cooper wasn’t busy. I need someone to play with. So I picked up my flowers and went home.

That night I went outside to look at the stars without Cooper. I saw the big dipper and the little dipper and the big wrench and the little wrench and a wishing star. After I was there for an hour I went home and went to bed.

That night I dreamt I was a human and I was playing with a disk Cooper called a Fresbye with three other humans. I was bragging to Cooper, "look at me now! I can’t believe you didn’t like humans before! You were silly!"

I woke up the next morning to the birds singing in my little hut. I still thought about how it would be to live like a human. Oh well, my birthday is soon, actually tomorrow! I’ll Invite Cooper, Bun the bunny, Hopper the frog, Flyen the bird. I better forget about being a human if I want Cooper to come to my party. But I didn’t. I got right to work for my party, I made invitations out of rocks, I scraped the words on with another rock. I made banners out of grass and treat bags for everybody.

I went to the park again to pick more flowers for the party, and I saw the same just as I had saw yesterday, playing with the same disk, then I saw it fly into the mud. "Eewww," said one human. "Yuck," said another. What was the big deal? I mean I walk in it all the time, it’s fun to prance around in it. I went over and walked in the mud. It made my paws feel all cool and squishy. It felt good. Is the fresbye heavy? Should I get it for the humans? I didn’t know what I should do. I decided I would give it to them if I could pick it up with my teeth or scoot it out of the mud, so first I tried to scoot it out but the mud was too sticky, then I tried to pick it up with my teeth. I could! I dropped it by one of the human's “paws,” they pet me for a long time and they were very surprised that I went in the mud and got the fresbye for them. I could tell by the look on their faces, they kept saying that I was a very good cat. Then I left for home so I could get the letters and deliver them.

First I went to Cooper's house. He looked at the invitation and said he would love to come since I’m his best friend. Next I went to Flyen the bird’s house, and he said it would be a blast! Then I went to Hopper the frog’s house, and he said he would be delighted to come to my birthday! Last of all I went to Bun the bunny’s house, and he asked, "how old will you be? "I’ll be four," I answered. "Well then, it’ll be lovely."

So after that I went to catch dinner, and then there he was, the old rat I’ve been trying to catch for two years straight. I tiptoed toward him. He didn’t move, he just stared, and then I turned around like I was leaving but I was really getting behind him so I could sneak up on him. I kept moving forward. He didn’t budge. I was so close, so I tried to grab his tail with my teeth and guess what! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I, Tiger, had finally caught the rat I had been trying to catch for two years straight! So I went to bed full and happy that night. I dreamt that my birthday was the most wonderful birthday I ever had! When I woke up it was my birthday. My fourth birthday! And I hoped it would be just like the birthday in my dream.

Later that day my guests arrived. And first we played Pin the Tail on the Kitty, then we played relay races which I won! Then it was time for the presents! Hopper gave me a rock shaped like a heart. "Thank you," I said. Then Bun gave me a really funny pair of fake glasses. I said, "ha ha ha! Then Flyen gave me a soft rag he picked up in a yard. Finally Cooper gave me the best present of all: the biggest rat I had ever seen and it had a piece of blue grass in it’s mouth. Cooper said that I should make a wish and blow on the piece of blue grass because he said it was magical. So I wished what I had been thinking about for a while, but Cooper wouldn’t like it not one bit. So I wished I was a human. And then right there in front of everybody I fainted.

Everybody rushed over to me and then I grew. When I woke up I saw that my wish had came true! I was a HUMAN! Oh my gosh! I am a HUMAN! I could finally see what it was like to be a HUMAN! Everyone gasped, especially Cooper. "Tiger ddddid yyyou wwwish yyyou wwwere aaa hhhuman?" asked Cooper. "Yes," I said. Everybody else said, "Oh man! My friend is a human!" "OK guys, I think the party is over now you can leave, everybody except Cooper," I said. "He may come with me to the park."

When we got to the park I saw the same three humans as the last two days. "I’m going to go ask them if I could join them," I told Cooper. "No! I repeat No!" said Cooper. "Why not?" I asked. "You just don’t like humans." "Yesterday I got the fresbye for them because it was stuck in the mud," I said. "YOU WHAT!" said Cooper. So I asked the humans if I could join them, they said yes. So I tried to throw it, it went the opposite way I wanted it to go. Then I said I had to go so I went home and then told Cooper he could go home. Then I said to myself how will I get in my house? I guess I’ll sleep under that rag Flyen gave me. Night came. It was cold that night. I probably only got an hour of sleep that night.

Then Cooper came to my house and said, "I can’t believe you wished you were a human!" "Please Cooper, could you find another piece of magical blue grass? I’ll never turn myself into a human again, I promise," I said. "But you haven’t lived a long human life," Cooper bragged. "Please Cooper," I said. "Oh all right, but you are VERY lucky I’m doing this," said Cooper. So he went on a magical blue grass hunt. It was the next morning when Cooper returned. "Boy was that a long hunt for a magical blue grass," said Cooper. "Oh Cooper, how can I ever thank you!" I said. "By not turning into a human again," he said. "Deal," I said. I blew the magic blue grass and wished as hard as I could and I wished I was a cat again, a four year old cat. Then I was a normal CAT named Tiger and I was four and I could fit in my house and most of all I had my best friend back.
