Tabby Tales

by Maryann Penner

Tabby was a very late Valentine’s Day gift from my husband; she was more of a spring surprise. My husband didn’t realize that February is not a prime month for kittens. He spent a lot of quality time searching shelters for a few months while I wondered and speculated what kind of gift takes months to find and where was my husband going without me. He had told me he was waiting for my gift to me made, so I thought custom jewelry. The anticipation was killing me. I was flattered that he was going to so much trouble in his quest for the perfect gift. Then one weekend morning he was gone a few hours and he brings home “the Tabby.”

She was a cute little orange tabby with great big ears and eyes that searched down into the soul of a person. Tabby’s name is actually Tabitha taken from a favorite old TV show Bewitched. Boy did she bewitch my man, and did so for over 16 years. She made us laugh so hard we’ve pulled a muscles we didn’t know had and we have cried a river over her loss. Tabby has been gone almost six months but still so much apart of our lives. Before “The Tabby” had entered our lives we had lost one of our cats a few months earlier to a stupid repairman who had locked him out of our apartment. We searched high and low and shed many tears but Reilly my very shy little boy was no where to be found. I had always adopted boys but my husband is a ladies man. When he found Tabby, she just knew that he was the only man for her.

Tabby was the princess; she ruled our house for many years once my big mainecoon Whiskers passed on. Tabby batted those golden peepers at my man and he just melted. It was funny to witness how she could turn my big burly guy into Jell-O. Cats choose their humans not the other way round although they like us to let us think it is our idea. Tabby found her man and she was fiercely jealous of anyone that separated her from him. To be honest since my Whiskers was very possessive of me; it was just a matter of time for love to bloom between them. I just didn’t expect a case it was total infatuation.

Ok, I was a little jealous but we were newly weds after all. Well it’s now 16 or so years later and I can tell you that I was the other woman. I know she was a cat. Just think about it, she kept her girlish petite figure all 16 years. She didn’t have to worry about grey hair, makeup, or fashion. She was always dressed, on time and ready to go. Bathroom time was never an issue and she even preferred the seat up. She kept her credit card usage limited to vet visits which she stressed so much about that you just couldn’t be angry. Dinner wasn’t a big deal as long as it was on time. She loved all the big holidays regardless of whose family came just so long as it involved turkey and leftovers. At the mention of the words “treat” she could smile so sweet and purr so loud you had to turn the TV up to hear. My hubby thought it was sweet but I only got dirty looks when I tried to separate him from his remote control to get his attention. She loved my man best when he was all smelly, grumpy, and mad at me. She got his total attention when nothing I could do would work and knew it. If any cat could be caught gloating, it would be our Tabby. Tabby was one very smart cat who knew just what buttons to push to get her way. In this she was extremely accomplished and taught our other girls lots of bad lessons. The Tabby bewitched us all for many happy years.
