Karin
Michels is a long time resident of South Pasadena. She began
teaching in 1975 at Cambridge Elementary in Pasadena CA.
She taught for many years at Le Studio
(Original Home of the Pasadena Dance Theatre - a highly prestigious
Ballet School)
from 1981 - 1996.. She has taught at Montessori Schools,
and
various private schools as well throughout the Pasadena,
La Canada,
San Dimas and West Covina areas. In 2005 she retired from
teaching to pursue another avocation.
Karin was
a Dance student at Cal State L.A. and at Cal State Long beac h, and was
accepted to the Dance Department at UCLA in 1980. She is a few
units from a Dance degree as well as a few units shy of a psychology
and music degree. She enjoyed teaching in private schools and
dance studios and instead of completing her degrees she enjoyed a
teaching career without one.
She studied dance in New
York city with The Joffrey Ballet School; Murray Louis Modern Dance
Company;
Jose Limon Co.,
and The Martha Graham Co. She performed in
lofts
and venues with various off shoot individuals/companies.
She
attended
Manhattanville College, in Purchase NY , two summers, studying and
performing
in workshops with world acclaimed
Modern Dance Company - "The Jose
Limon
Company", and 3's Co. and Annabelle Gamson (World Acclaimed Isadora
Duncan soloist)
She was given a
scholarship
to study with The Murray Louis Modern Dance Company by the late Jan
Day at Cal State LA, in 1979.
(a one
time member of the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company).
She
also took classes with Annabelle Gamson (Internationally acclaimed
Isadora
Duncan Interpreter/Soloist) and has learned dances from friends who
danced with Duncan Co.'s and
studied with Hortense Kooluris, (a famous protege of the
"Isadorables") a 3rd generation Isadora Duncan
Dancer.
Karin researched the life and dances of Isadora Duncan and
researched the music used in
many of her dances.
She staged "The Story of the LegendaryIsadora Duncan", June 10th 2000.
at the So. Pasadena Junior High School auditorium.
She gave a workshop for the Cal
Tech Dance Troupe at Cal Tech, teaching the
history and dances of
Isadora Duncan, 2002.
She studied with Ann Barlin at Loyola University who was a pioneer
of
children's dance programs in Los Angeles,
and a member of the
Lester
Horton modern dance company.
Ann received several Arts grants and
produced numerous books and recordings related to children's dance
programs.
Consequently Karin became a member of "Movement Teachers Co-Op in
1983, and
gave a workshop teaching
her own creative movement techniques to
elementary
teachers at the School of Performing Arts/USC annex .
Karin produced a Holiday Cd called
"The Dancing Easter
Bunny Hop Song".
Includes St. Patrick's , Valentines and Easter related
Dance/music/songs.
Karin
Michels has also played classical flute since she was 7 yrs. old and is
a few units short of a degree in
music, having emphasized Flute Performance.
She has played in various churches,
malls, restaurants, and private parties.
She has also taught flute privately and assisted the La Canada
Elementary School Music Teacher, conducting and coaching privately-
1993.
Having
Also majored in Psychology with an emphasis in Movement Therapy, she
led a
movement therapy program at San Gabriel Community Mental Health Clinic
- 1976.
Karin
has performed throughout the
Southland in various venues with various dance artists: In the Art
Gallery of
Chapman
University with "Cylinder", directed by Cyrus Parker ( also
the director of dance at Chapman With
Jamie
Nichols (who is
director
of "Fast Feet") at The John Anson Ford
Theatre and with
The Pasadena Dance Theatre
at The San Gabriel Auditorium; The John West Ensemble for the
Pope's
Arrival at
Dodger Stadium; Mary Vandebur/Mann at "The House", Lulu
Washington and Carolyn Berger in
Carolyn's Ensemble
at Academy West;
Karen
Hahn and Dancers at "The
House"; At Pasadena City College in a cable television project for
which
Karin
choreographed a modern dance number"; In
La Traviata with The North East Opera Co. with
Charles
Edmondson; at Fuller Seminary Arts Festival as a soloist.
She
was on
television news and on
the front page of the Pasadena Star newspaper,
playing
the flute and dancing as a leprechaun with
her group "Petite Danseuse",
at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1997. (see photo below)
Karin
choreographed and performed “The Rag
doll Dance” for children's events
and art's festivals in
Pasadena as well as in convalescent homes where she has included
her students.
Karin
has also written children's dance
books, and musical
tapes
- songs for Creative Dance.
Karin
directed and danced with “Petite
Danseuse” 1998-2001. She wrote,
produced and danced two
Isadora Duncan Solos, "Water Study", "Under the Scarf", with “The Story
of The
Legendary
Isadora Duncan”.
All of her students also performed in that production held at the
South Pasadena Junior High School
Audiotorium.
Karin
took her “Petite Danseuse “ troop to The South Pasadena Fun Faire -
May 2001.
She performed
Isadora Duncan’s "Brahm’s Waltzes" and her students
performed "The
Children’s Dances" by Isadora Duncan.
