It's such a horrible thing...

(Oboe alights on the elder's shoulder, who watches him in shock)

Lizard type monsters...
elder: Ye--- yes---

(the elder is drawn in white and Oboe in gray against a black background. A note of music appears above his head)

Hamel:
Let go of the girl.

(several townspeople gather around the elder in disbelief)

Page 66
(Hamel crashes in a heap into the ground. Two of the monsters just watch blankly)
fx: <foom>
<crack>

(Flute settles her hat on her head with a mortified, disbelieving look on her face)
Flute:
Eh?

(Hamel screams wildly as he grabs his right leg. The monsters watch in blank shock behind him. Oboe screams at Hamel from the corner)
Hamel:
GGYYYAAAHHH
I BROKE
MY LEG~~~

Oboe: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING---!

Page 67
(Flute and the townspeople watch on with flat, mortified expressions)

(Hamel's hand reaches up)
fx: <swish>

(Hamel's cape swirls)
fx: <fwish>

(Hamel stands seriously and proudly; however, his right leg is bent up at an unnatural angle. Oboe is in the corner sweating as he stares at the leg)
fx: <thunder rumbling>
Hamel:
Hmph. It's true that I'm the "legendary strongest greatest hero", super-extra-large violin playing mastser Hamel.
Run now while you still can.
fx: <tremble tremble>
Oboe: [Hey, hey, your leg is turned the wrong way...]

(the three monsters stare with flat expressions in disbelief)

Flute:
Aah

(Flute watches worriedly as do the elder and some townspeople)
townsperson:
Eek...
Flute: Sto-- sto...

(Flute screams with all her might and clasps her hands)
Flute:
Stop---

(Hamel crazily punches the monsters away)
Hamel:

fx: <phoom>

Page 69
(Flute and the others stare in comic shock)
Flute:
Eh---

(the three monsters cower)
monster 1:
Im... impossible
monster 2: We really pounded him~~~

(Hamel stands with his violin, his arms outsretched by his sides. The monsters look on frearfully)
fx: <rumble rumble rumble>
Hamel:
How dare you beat on my elegant beautiful face~~~
The price you'll pay is high~~~

(Hamel holds his violin and bow before him, ready to play, and lightning flares behind him)
Hamel:
I'LL MAKE YOU LISTEN TO MY SUPER-EXTRA-LARGE VIOLIN---!
AS A PRELUDE TO YOUR DEATH---!

(the three monsters stare in shock and abject fear)
monster(s):
Wha---

Page 70
(Hamel leans back as he plays dramatically)

(aerial view of Hamel playing as he performs a plié)

(Hamel leans forward with an over-serious look on his face as he plays)

(aerial view of Hamel as he turns while playing)

(Hamel finishes the turn)

(Hamel leans forward in a type of arabesque and continues to play)

(the monsters all show different reactions: one is fearful, the other frustrated, the third blank-faced and confused)
monster 1:
Wha... what-- he's started playing his dumb looking instrument and really stupidly---
monster 2: Vi-- violin! It's a violin to be precise---
monster 3: [It looks like a double bass...]

Page 71
(Hamel plays between the monsters and the townspeople against a dark, circularly clouded background)

(two of the monsters begin to cower)
monster 1:
Wha-- what's this guy...?
monster 2: This time... what's he up to

(close up of the elder, his eyes widening in realization)
elder:
Bu---

(several townspeople look around unsure)
man 1:
But this...!
man 2: Aah

(Flute clutches her crucifix to her chest as she startles with realization)
Flute:
Def-- definitely a powerful musician but stupid!
This music is sublime and beautiful---!

Page 72
(Flute watches Oboe curiously as he speaks)
Oboe:
"The Song of the Earth".

(Hamel plays, more seriously this time)
Oboe (off):
The great symphonist Mahler's 10th symphony, "The Song of the Earth".

(as Oboe speaks, the face of Mahler appears beside him)
Oboe:
His mother and father were always fighting. He was one of 14 siblings, 6 of which died of natural causes (TN: that "natural cause" was diptheria, which at that time, was quite common), one in an accident, one committed suicide, and his beloved mother Marie had a bad heart. Mahler was not blessed with a happy home.

(Flute, the elder, and the townspeople gather behind Oboe to listen against the misty, dark background)
Oboe:
Also, Mahler himself suffered from the same heart condition as his mother.
Mahler was always fighting death, and what came from that is the symphony "Song of the Earth".

(Oboe is silhouetted in the foreground as a shocked Flute is in focus behind him)
Oboe:
The music you're listening to brings out the heart's fondest memories.

(close up of Flute, crying)
Oboe (narration):
Te-- tears...
fx: <drip>

Page 73
(view of the tops of buildings in the middle of winter as snow falls)

(aerial view of the town, and people bustling about)
voice (off):
<baby's rattling cry>

(a small baby in a basket sits outside at a doorstep with a note, reading "Please take care of this child" attached to its blanket)
baby:
<crying>

(several people look behind them, irritated, as they walk by)
baby (off):
<crying>

(aerial view of the baby at the doorstep as people walk by)
baby:
<crying>

Page 74
(two old hands reach out)

(aerial view of the elder, from the back, kneeling in front of the baby)
elder:
Oh, okay okay...
baby: <crying>
elder: You must be cold... Poor thing...

(the elder holds the baby in his arms, smiling)
elder:
Really, don't cry, it'll be okay.
Really, it's all right.

(close up of Flute, with her hand covering her mouth, crying; overlaid is an image of the elder holding the baby, her, as the note, along with a crucifix, lie in the crib)
Flute:
Grandad---
fx: <drip>

(profile of Flute, crying as she tilts her head up, clasping her hands together by her chest)
Flute:
Aah, what has this music shaken from my heart---

(Flute turns in surprise as a dark shadow trembles in the corner)
Flute:
Wha--!
fx: <tremble tremble>

Page 75
(the three monsters are crying and about to kill themselves: one holds numerous pills, one about to hang himself, and one with a knife to his throat. Two letters lie on the ground reading "last will and testament", the other "to mother")
monster 2:
<whimper whimper whimper)>
monster 3: [I'm sorry...]

(Flute and the elder stand blank faced and disbelieving in the background as the three monsters continue to weep pitifully in the foreground)
elder:
....
monster 1: <whimper>
monster 2: I can't go on~~~
monster 3: Forgive me~~~
I'm sorry~~~

(Flute stands tensely as she thinks)
Flute:
I-- I get it! They were moved by the beautiful music
The fiends felt so guilty for their evil ways that it changed them...

(close up of Flute's eye, shocked)
Flute:
Who-- who in the world is he...
WHA--!

Page 76
(Hamel plays the violin at the three monsters while they try to kill themselves. Flute face faults and Oboe just watches blank faced but darkly)
Hamel:
Take that die die~~
Hurry up and die~~

(Flute is blank faced in shock as Hamel tries to kick the monster about to hang himself off his block)
Hamel:
Take~~ that. Hurry up and die already!
fx: <whap>
<rattle rattle>

monster:
Eek--

(the monster cries as Hamel stands irritated behind him)
monster:
I-- I can't~~ I can't die--!

(the three monsters prostrate themselves in front of Hamel)
monsters:
We-- we're sorry
fx: <bow>
monsters:
We won't do any thing bad anymo~~re.
We'll enter a monastery~~~
We'll atone all our lives~~~

(close up of a weepy eyed, flower-framed monster)
monster:
We will...

(close up of Hamel looking down expressionless, but not unsympathetically)

(Flute stands with her hands clasped behind her back in surprise)

Page 77
(Hamel walks away wiping his hands as the three monsters lay beaten on the floor with barrels and barrels stuffed in their mouths. The barrels have writing on them reading "diseased", "lump", "little monkey", "paint brush", "painting", some other writing I can't decipher, and a flag reading "monkey's uncle"; Flute and the elder, as long as the crowd, stand speechless in the background)
fx: <slap slap>
<blink blink>

monster:
How cruel...

(Oboe speaks to the surprise of the elder and Flute)
Oboe:
A-- a person wants to leave his name behind for the future generations as a great composer but rumor can ruin that...
[Bu-- but this is cheating...]

(close up of Oboe speaking, Flute still listening behind him)
Oboe:
Each of a composer's famous pieces leaves behind sympathetic feelings.

(close up of Oboe's eye, intense)
Oboe:
HE (Hamel) CONVEYS THIS IN HIS PERFORMANCE!
HE USES THIS TALENT TO CONFUSE AND DEFEAT HIS ENEMIES --!

Page 78
(Hamel stands before Flute, neither one's face visible. The townspeople stand behind them in anticipation)
fx: <rustle>

(close up of Hamel speaking expressionlessly)
Hamel:
You were hurt...

(Flute looks up surprised at Hamel)
fx: <ba-bump>
Flute:
Eh-- yeah, well...

(Flute starts bowing and thanking Hamel in front of a confused and happy crowd)
Flute:
Ah--! Well... Thank you so much--!
We owe you greatly--!
fx: <fawning>

(Hamel's hand lifts Flute's hat from her head, who freezes in surprise)

Page 79
(Hamel fastidiously ties a bandage to Flute's head)

(close up of Hamel smiling)
Hamel:
Now you're okay.
fx: <grin>

(Flute falls on her rear on the floor, smiling with tears welling up in her eyes)
Flute:
Ha... Hamel, sir.
fx: <drop>

(misty view of Flute wiping away her tears and Hamel kneeling before her. Both are smiling)
Flute:
Thank you... Sweet hero...

Page 80
(everyone starts cheering around Hamel and Flute)
crowd:
Great hero--!
Thank you so much--!
fx: <clapping>

(the elder, smiling, approaches Hamel and Oboe)
elder:
We really owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

(Oboe laughs dismissively from Hamel's shoulder, but gets a suspicious side long glance from Hamel)
Oboe:
Oh ho ho, no thanks are necessary.
fx: <blink>
Oboe: We would naturally want to help...

(Hamel, his face hidden, grabs Oboe in his fist and bops him over the head to the bug-eyed surprise of Flute and the elder)
fx: <bong>
Oboe:
OUT.

(Hamel walks away and tosses Oboe over his shoulder)
fx: <fling>

(Oboe lies crying on the ground in the foreground with a huge lump on his head as Hamel stands smiling smugly in the background to the shock of the crowd)
Hamel:
Hmph... A reward, huh... (TN: the phrase the elder and Flute used to thank Hamel before, while implied as being a thank you, literally means that a reward is owed, thus the difference in Oboe and Hamel's interpretation)
fx: <rustle>
crowd:
[....]
fx: <blink blink>

Page 81
(Hamel starts scribbling on a piece of paper as Flute and the elder, backed by the crowd, watch in confusion)
Hamel:
Let's see. Emergency handling of three lizard type monsters...
And included medical treatment...
fx: <scritch scritch scritch>

(close up of Flute standing blank faced in confusion)

(the elder watches Hamel similarly as he continues to write)
Hamel:
And now there's the special beginning of fiscal year service fee too~~~
You guys are lu~~cky.

Hamel:
Well-- that's the way it go~~es~~~
[Heh heh heh]
elder: Two million Yen.

(the elder holds up the bill, which reads "bill...")
elder:
You-- you want us to pay this?

Page 82
(Hamel rubs his hands together in the foreground, smiling, while Flute, the elder, and the crowd stand blank faced in the background)
Hamel:
Of course-- that's business, after all--
elder: Bus... business, you say?

(close up of Flute winking and laughing)
Flute:
No-- no way-- Hamel is just joking---
Very fun.

(Hamel grabs Flute around the neck as he did Oboe and bops her on the head. The elder goes bug eyed)
Flute:
NY--
fx: <bonk>

(Hamel tosses Flute over his shoulder to the mortification of the elder)
fx: <flip>

(Flute, crying and sporting a huge lump, lies next to Oboe who is lying the same way. Hamel just walks away from them towards a shocked crowd)
Flute:
....
fx: <blink blink>
<drip>

Page 83
(a big fisted Hamel grabs and threatens a terrified elder in front of a panicking crowd)
Hamel:
You bastard-- This is a business after all~~~ What did you think, hey---!
townsperson 1: Eek!
townsperson 2: Wah-- Elder~~!

(Flute, blood dripping down her forehead, and Oboe continue to lie on the ground)

<chuckles>

(Hamel sits on a large throne holding a large turkey leg and a mug labeled "sake", surrounded by village girls dressed as playboy bunnies. The girls are forcing smiles as they serve him food and drink and fan him with a fan labeled "fan". A large banner hangs over him reads "Thank you for everything Great Hamel!!!". The panel is labeled at the bottom "the village girls")
Hamel:
Wa ha ha! That's it--- that's it---
Look sincere, sin--cere--!

(Flute, also in a playboy bunny costume, cries as she pours out beer into a mug with the elder and Oboe who are preparing trays and crying as well)
Flute:
That guy... Are you sure he's a hero...?
Hamel (off): WA HA HA, BRING ME MORE MONEY--- AND LOOK HAPPY--
elder: The truth hurts...
Oboe: It pretty much does...
