Because
it is about an hour's flight from West Palm Beach, Green Turtle Cay (pronounced
Key) is one of the most accessible destinations in the Caribbean. Yet its
location a short water taxi ride east of the much larger and more developed
island of Great Abaco has left it comparatively unspoiled. Some visitors have compared
Green
Turtle Cay, with
its village of New Plymouth and its quaint houses and un-trodden beaches, to Key West and the Florida Keys in Ernest Hemmingway's days. There
are even uninhabited islands a rental outboard motor boat away to the north and
south, again much like the Florida Keys in the 30's.

the Bahamas,
with wonderful jewelry stores and
prices, means that many attributes of civilization are just a water taxi away.
Green Turtle Cay itself has electricity, telephones, internet access, and
prepaid cell phone service, although these amenities can be less reliable than
in the States.
To
be fair, prices on Green Turtle Cay are a bit higher than in the States because
everything is boated in. The weather is also warmer than in southern Florida,
but that can be a plus in Winter. Nevertheless, many visitors believe that Green
Turtle Cay offers a unique combination of Out Islands adventure and escape
within easy reach of civilization.
