ANNUAL New Jersey Traffic Handler AWARDS

Although we no longer hold an annual CONFAB meeting, we still intend to recognize and honor those NJ traffic handlers who have made outstanding contributions to our nets during the year. Nominations for the three annual awards are requested at the end of each year and should be sent to your Section Traffic Managers.

Each award comes with a nice plaque which the winner gets to proudly display in his/her shack for one year.

N2XJ Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award  -  In 2008, the leadership of the National Traffic System in New Jersey announced the establishment of a new "Lifetime Achievement Award" for the state.   This award is in addition to other awards which recognize the achievements of the outstanding NJ traffic handler, the outstanding newcomer, and the outstanding VHF traffic handler.

This award is in memory of Carl Felt Jr, N2XJ (1908-2000).  Carl was a unique member of the NJ traffic handling fraternity up to his passing in  June 2000.  It is our intent to honor Carl's memory by bestowing this award to the amateur radio traffic handler who has given a lifetime of service and dedication to New Jersey NTS.

This award, also to be known as the "Captain's Award,"  will be given to an amateur only once in his/her lifetime.  In the event there are no suitably qualifed candidates for a particular year, the award will not be given.   Nominations for the award, as with the other three statewide NTS awards, will be solicited from the NJ NTS community and whatever other operators that would like to make a nomination.

W2SWE Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to NJ Traffic-handling  - The W2SWE Memorial Award was named in honor of Ed Malecki, a cornerstone of NJ Net operations throughout the 1970s. Ed epitomized the best in traffic handlers through his expertise, his volunteerism, and his mentoring. Ed died in early 1979 and the award has been made every year since 1979 by nominations from our membership.  (This is NOT an award for "flash in the pan" superstars who are "here today and gone tomorrow."  It is the highest recognition of SUSTAINED achievement, as recognized by your peers.)

W2UEZ Memorial Award for Most Promising "Rookie of the Year"  - The H. William West W2UEZ Award honors Bill West for his outstanding achievements in managing and growing the NJ Slow Net and mentoring newcomers to traffic handling. Ironically, Bill was also the first winner of the SWE award for his good deeds. Since 1981, the W2UEZ Award has been presented yearly to the most promising newcomer in NJ traffic handling – the kind of guy or gal that Bill would be proud of.
