The Pollo Boys Home Page - another voice for Elián González

West Kendall, Florida

On April 22, 1999, a crime was committed. The most powerful country in the world focused its might on a defenseless family in Miami, in the middle of the night, for the benefit of a sworn enemy. Afterwards, the President of the US answered a question about whether excessive force was used by turning his back and walking away. This was not about reuniting a boy with his father. This was about returning a child who, with his mother's ultimate sacrifice, managed to escape from a concentration camp, and every attempt being made by the US to send him back. Through lies and propaganda reminiscent of the Third Reich, the story has been made into an issue of father and child reunification. A real father wants the best for his child. A real father does not want his child returned to a place of uncertainty and oppression. This was not a custody battle. This was an affront to decency. The vocal minority who wanted to send Elián back is the same minority who showed the world that the over 58,000 of its sons and daughters who died in Vietnam died in vain, by electing as their leader an immoral and self-serving draft-dodger. Wake up, America! Slowly but surely all our freedoms are being taken away in the name of the law. Stop and think about our freedom now versus our freedom thirty years ago. Then imagine where we will be in thirty years. I was too young to do anything about having my own country taken away, and I will be DAMNED if I'm going to sit idly by while this happens again. Remember the words of Martin Luther King, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere".
