Joel Peter Johnson is a freelance illustrator who makes his home in Brooklyn, NY
He graduated from the University at Buffalo with a BFA in Painting and Illustration.
Johnson is sought after for his fine art approach to illustration. Reinventing traditional
cliches with conceptual images that resemble moody renaissance frescoes. Johnson’s
artwork has been exhibited throughout the United States, most notably at the
Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Burchfield Art Center in Buffalo, New York and
at the Museum of American Illustration in New York City. Selections of his work
have twice been part of a national tour at the Museum of American Illustration
and his illustrations have been exhibited there as part of the Society of Illustrators
Annual Show since 1988. His work has been recognized by Graphis, Communication Arts,
PRINT, American Illustration, Art Directors Club of New York among others. In 1998,
he received a silver medal from The Society of Illustrators in New York. His work is
part of the M&T Bank Collection at the Burchfield Art Center. Time Magazine,
American Express, VISA, KQED/PBS, Newsweek, Viking-Penguin and Amnesty International
are among previous his clients.
