Outdoor picnic tables are
shaded by large oak trees and a brook babbles in the background. But if you
should visit on a typical Sunday you're in for something less serene.
Hundreds of bikers make the trip here (usually to complete a 12-mile ride
from Laguna Canyon) and before you know it there's a 'beer girl' out front
serving up cold ones. Even as a favorite hangout for motorcycle lovers, the
crowd is fairly diverse, and most are just looking for a fun spot to relax.
Reminiscent of historic Orange County, Cook's claims to be the oldest
restaurant in the area, and it has avoided being run out by chain
restaurants. The food is simple: BBQ, juicy burgers and great breakfast
specials. There are often impromptu jam sessions and the hired live
entertainment is typically a blues band. With a full bar and dance floor,
it's a lively spot. -- Victoria Namkung

Mugs
Away Saloon
27324
Camino Capistrano Laguna Niguel, CA
(949) 582.9716
Located just off the 5
fwy, Avery Pkwy
exit and down the road a piece on a deserted stretch of road at Camino
Capistrano on the right side of the railroad tracks!
Believe me, these details are important because there is nothing
else out here.
An eclectic saloon, it has plenty of character including various
signs, bicycles and other objects suspended from the ceiling with the
cobwebs. There is no food to
speak of unless your diet consists of peanuts, pretzels and potato chips,
so don’t go on an empty stomach or you may be disappointed.
The waitresses are friendly and the service is good, although it
doesn’t hurt to be assertive when ordering drinks. Rumor
has it this place is world-famous for the annual mooning of the Amtrak,
which occurs the second Saturday of each July.
This little ritual is so well known, it’s said the Amtrak drivers
bid for the shift well in advance! There
are literally thousands of people who show up for this block party to bare
their buns in unity at what started off as a bar room prank some twenty
years ago, and has been carried on ever since!
If you like Turks or Swallows Inn then you’ll love this little
place, as it’s along the same vein as these two. There is no shortage of
conversation, and casual attire is highly recommended!

A quaint little saloon located inconspicuously inside a tiny strip
mall next to the Pic-N-Save on South Beach Blvd and Atlanta in Huntington
Beach. Featuring live
entertainment seven nights a week, karaoke every Monday night and never a
cover charge.
The only red tape you’ll find here is on the dance floor. This dimly lit locale has a Roy Roger’s wagon-wheel type décor
with cowboy hats in various sizes scattered about--and watch out for
arrows sticking out of the wall. A
very casual “locals-only” hangout with friendly but slow service.
The crowd really
gets into the music, whether strutting and twisting in their seats or
literally tearing it up on the hardwood dance floor.
The bands that play here really make this place fun!
Featuring a great variety of live entertainment from jumping blues,
alternative rock, and classic rock seven nights a week with karaoke every
Monday night. Some of the
local favorites you’ll catch playing here are 2000 Lbs of Blues, and
Slingshot! – Teri Conrad, Entertainment Reviewer
