Cooking on a Towboat.

Most modern day Towboats have cooks on board to cook for the crews. There is nothing like working out on the barges all night long and catch the smell of bacon being cooked on the stove for breakfast. Some small boats and companies have no cooks on their boats at all. The crews have to do all of the cooking. Rather well I might add in some cases. The boats that do have cooks on them are a real blessing to the crews. Most boats have a budget to stay in and can spend so much a day per person. The cooks do a good job of ordering, preparing, and cooking the food. Fridays are fish and seafood days. Saturdays are hamburger and steak days. Sundays are fried chicken days. The rest of the week is just about what you would find on any kitchen table at meal time.

Cooks have three meals a day to cook for the crew and most start around 3:30 in the morning. The cooks can take breaks after breakfast and lunch. Most take power naps when they are on their breaks. If you have a really good cook on the boat it is hard not to put on any weight.
