Joe's friends are pulling together a website for him. It is still and probably will always be a work in progress. Check from time to time and watch it grow.

Cartoons and Illustrations

Joe Mayhew is perhaps best known for his cartoons and illustrations, including cartoons in a host of fanzines, Pirate Writings, and Assimov's, con badges, and the cover art for many con materials. Joe often attended cons and fanish gatherings with a small photoalbum containing a selection of his cartoons. He'd invite anyone to flip thru a dozen or so cartoons with him, and if you really liked one he might well pull it out and give it to you, particularly if you published a 'zine.  Here are some of Joe's latest (by the date in the cartoon):
[1999] [2000]
There is a lot of stuff and in time a lot more will appear here. Meanwhile there is a good sampling from the cartoons and drawings he provided for the Washington Area Science Fiction Association's Journal.

Joe's Canes

Joe carved many wooden canes in the last few years. He displayed and sold some in the art shows of East-coast cons such as PHILCON, or at the Celtic faire. Some were comissioned, and many were given to family and friends.

When Joe displayed his canes, he often put a sign on them to "Please Touch"; to really appreciate them you need to try them for how they fit the hand and rotate them to take in the whole design (simulated here with animated gifs).

Joe's canes are familiar to many, but here are some examples.

And More ...

Joe also carved larger wooden items and painted in oil. He popularized polyform some years back and many will probably remember his chess sets. Joe decorated more than a few DISCAVEs with quick drawings. In 1989 he made a dragon that was roughly 8 feet high and 8 feet wide, then went on to decorate the paper walls in collaboration with Ray Ridenour. There will never be a complete Mayhew collection since a lot of stuff found a happy home without any record copy. A lot of Joe's stuff will remain private treasures that will be found among fannish papers for years to come.
