Now that you're a producer, you have a part to play.
"That was one of the reasons for creating the story so that I could have a part, that I could have a part!" But the story itself came first and you and others concocted the story in its bare bones was what? |
"Basically we wanted to tell a story about.. I have an ex-wife who's remarried and we have a daughter together and I wanted to sort of explore that a little bit and my feelings and emotions about that...when she remarried and what my relationship would be with my daughter, you know, when you're separated from her."

| There's an extra complication in your case because as an actor you travel. You're not home a lot.
"Right! "Hard Promises" is about a guy who's gone on the road a lot, discovers all of a sudden at the beginning of the movie that his wife just divorced him in absencia. He receives a wedding invitation to her new wedding. So he goes back to try to talk her out of it. He learns about a lot of things." |

The first thing that he's got to learn is that there is such a thing as divorce in absencia and he's divorced. So without revealing whether she comes back to him or whether she marries this nicer stable guy. What do you think she should do?

"It's interesting, I mean, it's an interesting dilemma because she manages to reach a place in her life where her choices are made in terms of her reality. She understands her reality in a way that is different than the way he understands reality. So she makes a choice that she tries to commit to. He in the course of trying to deal with her choice learns a lot about himself and about family and home and commitment."

What does he learn? Can you state it simply because I've got a feeling that what Joey Coulter learns, William Petersen, the ex-husband, dad, might also have learned.
"Well, I've learned that when you tell somebody that you love them, whether or not you stay with them or not in any sort of way, you can continue to love them. That it's a commitment to care and love and nurture..." |

What about the being there part?
"Well, the being there part is something I'm still trying to work out because, you know, I'm in the process of trying to create a situation where I'm not on the road all the time and I can be around for my loved ones too.." |
How? As an actor how do you do that? We're in New York even as we speak.
"Yeah, it's hard. It's hard. I've been living out of a backpack most of my life, you know." So you can't give up acting and.. "Well, you can settle down a little more at least, at least in your heart." |

But you can be a producer. They just use the phone.
"Right. I don't get to do the phone part." Well, William Petersen, see you in your next film. |
| "Thanks. I want to say, if I could, I want to say hi to my Dad. He's recuperating in the hospital. Hi Dad! I'll see you later this afternoon. I love you."
