               A Frightful and Fatal Fall
About 12 o'clock today, John Armstrong, a laborer employed at the new building in
course of construction for the Treasury Bureau of Engraving and Printing, while
engaged in assisting one of the engineers in putting up some scaffolding, fell
backwards from a platform on which he was standing, a distance of about ten feet,
striking his head on a stairway near the well hole about 55 feet, striking his
head on a beam, crushing his skull, breaking an arm and inflicting serious internal
injuries. He was picked up unconscious and in a dying condition, and a physician
was summoned who pronounced the injuries fatal. He was removed in an ambulance to
his house No. 2610 1/2 Pennsylvania Avenue, near Rock Creek, where he has a wife
and five children living. At last accounts he was breathing, but there are no

          - One of the soldiers buried by Elizabeth Thorn

[Elizabeth Thorn assumed the position of caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery from 1862-1865
while her husband served in the Union Army. Returning after the battle, she found her
gatehouse home in ruins with dead and wounded soldiers all about her. Although six-months
pregnant, she was ordered to bury a large number of soldiers. Unable to hire men, she
had to dig the graves herself in one of the rockiest regions of the cemetery, with only
the help of her elderly father. In the weeks following the Battle of Gettysburg,
records show Elizabeth buried 91 soldiers. A monument of her stands just inside the
cemetery, honoring the efforts and dedication of all the women of Gettysburg.]

** Soldier's Monument Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia - It stands on the highest point in the cemetery, and of the soldiers whose names are carved upon it, a few are buried under its shadow in the beautiful level plot surrounding it. Others are buried in their family lots, others on the battlefields, and some of them, the last that was ever known, was that they fell in battle (Philadelphia Ledger)

***Salisbury National Cemetery was initially a simple burial ground, established by the Confederates in 1861 in a field next to Salisbury Prison for captured Union soldiers who died in the prison. While burials were initially made using coffins and individual graves, when the prison population swelled and deaths increased in the fall of 1864, mass unmarked burials became the norm. Eighteen trenches measuring about 240 feet long, at the southeast end of the cemetery were used. An 1871 report indicates, “The bodies were placed one above the other, and mostly without coffins.” Early estimates of the number of burials were around 11,700 while later research has placed the number closer to 5,000. The eighteen burial trenches are still visible today. In 1909 Pennsylvania erected a monument in the Cemetery to commemorate “…the patriotic devotion, heroism, and self-sacrifice of the officers and soldiers of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, who died while confined as prisoners of war in the Confederate Military Prison at Salisbury, North Carolina… A grateful Commonwealth renders this tribute to their honor and memory".
