I really enjoyed looking at your pictures and reading the articles. I'm not a marine or related to any, but my very first boyfriend joined after we got together, then because of some stuff that happened while he was away the first time after bootcamp, we ended up breaking up. Then I moved to Las Vegas and lost him. I haven't talked to him in aout 7 months and my heart breaks more everyday. You see, I still love him with all of my heart. So, if anybody who reads this knows LCRPL. Matthew McCollough, please tell him I'm home. Tell him Tiffany loves him more than anything in the world, and I would give anything to have him back again. THANX! SEMPER FI!

My father served in the 509th from early 1943 in Tunisia to Anzio where he was wounded. He was with the scout company who captured the island of Ventotene while the rest of the unit was jumping in Avellino. He was also in the mess above Venafro. He retired from the Army in 1963. His name was Alfred L. Paul. He passed away August 25, 2002. He was very proud to have served with the Gingerbread Men, the best unit of his career.

I was so excited to find your website! I'm the military historian for my family. One of my father's cousins, Lester Crumley also served with the 509th. He trained at Fort Benning and was one of the original members. He was in Operation Torch, etc. It seems that Lester and Edward must have served together from August 1944 through December 1944. Thank you so much for sharing Edward's story with the world. My family and I appreciate it so much!

OUTSTANDING! Loved the Nov 2003 news scroll. Have read before the Marine Corps spin on Genesis - but I enjoyed reading it once again. In 2002 went back to PI to support the graduation of young man I knew when he was as a Boy Scout. His dad, a good friend and a 27-year Army dog who's currently still in, could not attend as he was serving in Bosnia. I was very pleased to fill in as best I could and did so in the uniform of the day. An outstanding time for sure.

I enjoyed your work on the 509th. My dad (WWII 509th all the way survivor; invasion to Germany) passed away 2 years ago but he realized a personal dream when the victory song he co-wrote in Italy (1944)became the "official" victory song for the 509th. He lived to hear it played by an army marching band. These old WWII guys had alot of pride for their respective outfits and on behalf of my dad, the few that remain, I want to thank you for the fine work you have done here.

TEARS FROM THE YEARS
by Rebecca Waits

I lie dead on my face.
Does it matter my ethic or race?
Do you care I gave my “all” and my best?
I won’t see the honor pinned on my chest.
Cry no tears you me.
For I have completed my destiny.
My mission has only just begun.
I know my work as a soldier is never going to be done.
I am now your “Guardian Angel.”
My Reconnaissance is now guarding you soul.
Fighting away harm to you that you will never know.
Acknowledgement is something I will never receive on earth.
As my remains decay back into the sand.
My spirit rises to its duty at hand.
