From the book; Historical landmarks of New Rochelle, by Morgan Seacord published by Huguenot Historical Assoc. New Rochelle, NY 1931
“at the opening of the Revolution and many account have been preserved at their sufferings during the war. The first army landed on Pell's Point. that day, the aged mother, widow of Isaac Coutant Sr, died and due to the excitement of the advancing army and the interference of military regulations, it became necessary to bury her in a secluded spot on the hill a few hundred yards east of the house. This interment was the beginning of the present Coutant Cemetery. by Oct 21, the army had advanced to New Rochelle and took possession of the heights on which Coutant's farm lay and his house came in the midst of the camp. four days later the British withdrew and their place was taken by two battalions of Hessians under the command of Lt. Gen Knyphausen.”
