the History of the City of Newark, NJ, published in 1913 by the Lewis Historical
Publishing Co., NY:
Robert Treat and Jasper Crane went to New Amsterdam to see Governor Peter Stuyvesant regarding a place of settlement as early as 1661. This expedition was thwarted. In 1666,unhappy with the union of the New Haven and Connecticut Colonies, Jasper and his family joined Reverend Abraham Pierson to start "Milford.", a settlement at New-Ark, upon the Passiack River in the Province of New Jersey. He owned "Kingsland Farms" an estate in what is now Belleville, NJ. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/cranjasp.htm |

PASTOR ABRAHAM PIERSON 1640 -- the spiritual leader of a company of Puritans that left Lynn, Massachusetts and founded Southampton, Long Island, to organize a church. Southold was also a Puritan organization. 1644 -- Southampton was annexed to Connecticut. This so displeased Pastor Pierson that he removed to the town of Branford in the New Haven Colony. In Branford, Pastor Pierson, with the few followers from Southampton, with the people of Branford and others from the town of Wethersfield, founded the church society, which later was transferred to Newark. This city's original church organization, the First Presbyterian, as it is known today, is therefore about 20 years older than the city itself. See The HISTORY of the CITY of NEWARK, NEW JERSEY If you are interested in more information about this founder, I also recommend Janet Derbyshire's excellent Notes for Abraham PIERSON |

| Notes for WILLIAM POTTER:
William Potter was one of the signers of the original agreement entered
into by the first settlers of New Haven.
From http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/roh/potter.htm "Early New Haven records indicate that William's life was a 'good news - bad news' scenario. On the one hand his seating assignments in the church indicate that he progressed in the standing. On the other hand he was frequently fined for offenses ranging from absence at military training, improper care of arms, to failure to submit a timely inventory for taxation. " ...the close of his life ... he appears to have been the victim of a mental disorder..." see http://www.thevine.net/~bryan/scofield.pdf From Gen
