Ride to Work Day

May 18th was the annual bike to work day. The weather never seems to want to cooperate fully with this, as the skies were gray and threatening rain, and it was pretty cool for May. As is my usual morning routine, I shared a ride with my family to the point at which they turn off and head to their schools. I continued on into Frederick.

I was getting woried as I entered town because I didn't see many folks on bikes. A couple of the kids I see regularly on their way to school. Fortunately, as I got closer into town, I did begin to see more riders, both heading towards the rally location and coming from there.

I say the usual suspect at the rally location, held at the town train, bus and tansit station. I also ran iinto some nice folks I don't see too often, and even made some new introductions to equally nice people. Several people made nice comments about these pages and the Fixing Frederick project.

My friend Todd rolled up and was looking over my bike when he noticed that the inner chainring had lost a bolt. Oops. After a bit more time closing out the rally, Todd and I headed through downtown. He peeled off at his building and I went just down the block to mine.

It still hadn't rained by the time work ended, and the temps were still cool. I was heading on a slightly different route tonight, to New Market, MD, for dinner at the in-law's house. I'd meet my wife there and catch a ride home after dinner.

On the way I decided to catch a few new roads, all of them rather hilly, which made being on a geared bike pretty nice. The rain showers decided this was the right time to begin, but they were sporadic and short, so I never needed to change from windbreaker to rain jacket. Once I finished my detour, I jumped back on busy Rt. 144 to picturesque New Market, and wrapped up the evening with pizza among family and friends.
