9/11/2005 Ride

Mt. Airy

Sweet late summer day, with the weather warm, but not hot. I decided to get in a few more of the residential streets around Mt. Airy. I originally thought that doing a lot of riding in neighborhoods would be pretty boring. In fact, it has turned out to be fun. Even if the suburban architecture is pretty much the same, I get to see lots of people out and about.

	Leaving the school, I headed downhill, crossing the train tracks. This is the Mt Airy Loop, and it joins the Old Main Line just down the hill across Rt. 144.
	Mt. Airy suburbia.
	Some of the neighborhoods have paved trails in their "Open Space" (usually unbuildable drainage). This is a steeper-than-it-looks path.

	Lots of rolling short ups and downs. Enough to make this a pretty good workout.
	Cool lawn ornament. Your very own observatory. I like it.
	There are several nice and shady areas as well.
	This is the rail line I crossed earlier, coming into Mt. Airy proper.
	Looking the other way, the line passes a storage facility which rates it's own switcher. The tracks end just behind the building, but they used to cross Main St. to the station, and continue back to the main line east of town..
	Hood Street. Way steeper than it looks. I ended up walking this one.
	A good place for a break.
	The real reason I like to ride bikes. Guilt free.
	The only gravel of the day. Day Avenue.
	New development on a steep road. I had to zig-zag my way up, but I made it. These houses are sandwiched between the rail line and Rt. 144, with a view of an industrial area.
	Duplexes. High $400 K for a glorified townhouse. Ouch!
	Heading back through the neighborhoods I came across these kids who were using this stand to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief. Good for them! I had a couple of cups of lemonade and it really hit the spot. While we're on the subject, donate something yourself.
