I'm on several e-mail lists and discussion forums related to my interests in cycling. Every once in a while members of these groups will try to have a regional get together.
Dan Artley in Baltimore County was kind enough to host one at his home. About 25 participants came, representing the Classic Rendezvous List, the Internet-Bob List, and the Fixed Gear List.
The question I asked myself before leaving for the ride was:"Should I throw on the fenders?" The correct answer was "Yes." Unfortunately I answered "no." The question I failed to ask was "Did you remember your camera?" Also "no." Oh well, perhaps I'll add links to pictures that others took.
We started off from Dan's house and immediately climbed a hill, crossed York Rd. and climbed a second hill. Most of the group I was with got ahead of me there. Since I had the cue sheet stuck in my pocket, I naturally missed a right turn and went a couple of miles out of my way before I realized I was off course.
Finding my way back onto the route I caught up with one of the riders. His pace looked good to me, so we finished out the ride together. Bob was a pleasure to ride with and we had good time leisurely bringing up the rear back to Dan's home. The rain started about 10 miles into the ride. It was actually pretty pleasant to ride in though. The terrain could have been interchangeable with my own Frederick County area. Lots of short, sometimes steep hills, but nothing too unpleasant. Dan had described the ride as "fixed unfriendly." I would call it fixed friendly, but sometimes friendships are difficult.:^)
Once back at the house, the bike talk was in full swing, and well lubricated with a fine spread of sausages, brats, and dogs, with all the fixins, and plenty of fine beverages. I'm not very knowledgeable about a lot of the minutiae, but I can admire fine work, and there was plenty there. The one which caught my eye most was a Jack Taylor time trialer. It was just so pretty. Those older Raleighs are nice too. Mmmm. Internal geared hubs.
Soon enough it was time to go. Thanks so much to Dan and his wonderful wife Barb, for hosting this get together.
