Hello old buddy. Oh dear, now I'm talking to mountains...
A nice old church in Lewistown.
Part of the old works along Spahr's Quarry Rd.
These diamond plate bridge decks can be a problem when wet, but today were fine.
A bit less water than in January.
I imagine these stone houses along Catoctin Furnace Rd. were workers houses.
These were really tiny wild flowers.
This old bowstring arch bridge, c. 1872, was once located in Detour, MD, but was relocated here to the state park.
Another bridge, this one across Rt. 15. I decided to try it today.
Climb along the creek.
If I were pass hunting I could now claim Catoctin Hollow Rd.
I followed Catoctin Hollow down to Rt. 77. I wanted to go west. Guess which way goes uphill?
I turned left onto Tower Rd. and kept climbing. Eventually it leveled out at the top and the road turned to gravel.
Since I was on a mountain bike, I took this shortcut up the power lines to get to the top and miss a long paved climb. This was WAY steeper than it looks. I hiked it to the top.
This was the trail at the top. It was very rocky. I wonder who drove a VW this far in to loose a hubcap here. It sounds like something I'd try.
Abandoned building near the tower on Salamander Rock Rd, which is gated to prevent car access.
A bit of gravel road and I was on the trail to the overlook. Compare and contrast to March.
Panorama of the Monocacy River Valley
Another failed attempt at self-portraiture (but groove on those thigh muscles). You can get Kent Peterson's cool "Any distance is biking distance" T-shirt here, and support his bid to race the Great Divide Trail on a single-speed bike this summer.
I decided to take the Blue trail off the mountain. This is looking back up at the overlook outcrop from the trail.
There are a few really tough spots, but mostly some very nice trail. Right at the section before the road someone went crazy with water bars across the trail.
I had the option of going down Catoctin Hollow road and riding against traffic for a couple of hundred yards to the bridge across Rt. 15, or the take the trail down and cross the stream. I unwisely chose the latter. The water was COLD, and deeper than it looks.
I just had to put this in. Later in the day I took my son to his summer basketball team evaluations and as I was sitting in my truck, this turkey just strolled on by.
