The first time I went to Okinawa was in August 1962. I was there until April 1964. I was assigned to 1st HARB 3rd MAR DIV (USMC) in the Sukiran Area. They were to heavy and were disband. I was then transferred to HQ-2-12 and assigned for awhile to F-2-12 (USMC) also in the Sukiran Area.
I was stationed again on Okinawa with USA STRATCOM LL BN S from October 1971 to June 1976. I worked first in the USARIS HQ Building #1 in the Communication Center. Then I went to work in the Golf Ball area, Fort Buckner , first in the Carrier Section (CXR) and later in the Okinawa to Taiwan Cable Head.
I returned to Okinawa again in June 1978 and was there to July 1980 and was assigned to US Army Communication Command, Japan, Signal Agency South (USACC-J SAS). I again worked in the Cable Head for a while and then I was a Maintenance Team Chief on the Microwave Radios and Multiplex equipment. I did that until the Army contracted out 22 slots to NEC contractors. I was then assigned to monitor them as a Contract Representative. I went to all the Army Microwave Communication sites to work on the Radios and Multiplexers and to monitor the NEC contractors.
I have run across people that worked at Fort Buckenr Technical Control, Makiminato Telephone Exchange, NCOIC of the southern part of IJCS, Yadaki and Tengan M/W sites on the WWW.
During my stay in Okinawa I belonged to the Okinawa Model Railroad Club. The club was first at Camp Kue and was moved to Zukiran under the bleachers close to the NCO Club and below the Topper Club.
All together I spent 9 1/2 years on Okinawa. I enjoyed Okinawa very much during my stay there. It is like my second country and I hope to visit Okinawa again soon.
