Costa Rica has come a long way since the one node at UCR (and the first in all of Central America) to having almost four thousand nodes. This is a great achievement considering that most of the population was without personal telephones not so long ago. There are still many problems with the network though. For instance connectivity is still a fragile thing with disconnection common and speeds that would make us here in the United States cringe (there are many 28.8 Kb connections and even 9.6 Kb connections still in use). Below is a table listing the Domain hierarchy and the number of nodes associated with each domain. As you can see, education still has the greatest numbers - more then any other sector - just as it was in the United States when the Internet was first beginning. But commercial interests are not far behind and are growing at a much faster rate then any of the others.
