TicoNet
The young company leased the second Internet dedicated line in the country after La Nación (Costa Rica's leading newspaper), with the intention to sell Internet access at retail. The future goal was to become an Internet Service Provider. Unfortunately, the national telecommunications providers and the government soon squelched Internet access selling. It is still forbidden for private-owned companies to sell Internet access locally. TicoNet came up with three alternatives to do business: Sell Internet services as an agent, host World Wide Web sites, and delivers e-mail and account services.
One of the first goals of the young company was to bring the World Wide Web pages, or "sites" cost into a more reasonable entry fee for the average public. For instance, a typical WWW page setup about 4 years ago would have cost about $500 to setup plus a $100 of monthly fee. Initial costs were cut as much as 50% to get customers. People responded enthusiastically. TicoNet was also a pioneer in the implementation of bulletin board systems, or BBSs, being the first BBS in Costa Rica to work on a dedicated line. Later in 1995 a First Class (r) server was implemented, easing communication among the incipient Costa Rica on-line community.
From 1993 through late 1997, TicoNet worked in an apartment building in a downtown residential section in San Jose. Beginning early this year, their offices are located in a roomy, spacious office building in the San Pedro downtown area, complete with a strong Cisco router system, server room, a 768K dedicated line to the Internet, and a failure-proof electrical system to ensure smooth, uninterrupted flow of data exchange.
In March 1998, TicoNet joined two other computing enterprises to create a single entity called CORPORACION DE SERVICIOS INFORMATICOS (Computing Services Corporation), dedicated to fulfil all the Internet related services that today's competitive Web environment demands, such as dynamic data handling, computing advice and cutting-edge web presence development.
