YUMA YEAR-ROUND WALK

DATES: January 1 to December 31, 2008.
AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y1369. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.

From I-8: Eastbound -- Exit 4th Avenue, I-8 Business Loop, 1/2 mile south on 4th Avenue, on left (east) side.
PROCEDURE: In the Lobby look for the Walk Registration box and follow the directions.
START/FINISH TIMES:
You may participate in this event any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this event in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water, wear sunglasses and a hat, and use sunscreen.
DISTANCE: 10 km.
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The walk route follows Yuma city sidewalks, paved bike paths, and gravel paths, through city parks, along the Colorado River, past many historic sites including the Yuma Crossing State Historic Park, Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, and Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, and through the Yuma downtown area which offers numerous and interesting shopping experiences. The walk is rated 1 (1 is easiest and 5 is the most difficult); it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs
AWARD: There is no special award for this event. An interesting assortment of medals and patches from previous events, "B" awards, depicting desert flora and fauna and historic sites is available.
IVV Credit only is $3.00.
You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.
You may do this event one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

ELIGIBILITY: This event is open to everyone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. A portion of the walk goes on an abandoned Southern Pacific RR railroad bed. It also goes under the old steel truss railroad bridge which goes over the Colorado River.
RIVERWALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RiverWalk America Special Award Program. Part of the route goes along the Colorado River.
WALKING STATE PARKS IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking State Parks in the USA Special Award Program. A part of the route goes through Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and Yuma Crossing State Historic Park.
WALKING COURTHOUSES IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking Courthouses in the USA Special Award Program. The walk goes by the county courthouse on 2nd Ave.
SPIRIT OF WALKING CEMETERY STROLL SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Spirit of Walking Cemetery Stroll Special Award Program. The route of the walk goes past the historic Prison Cemetery.
AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the books Early Yuma, by Robert Nelson, 2006; and The Hell Hole: The Yuma Prison Story, by William and Milarde Brent, 1962.
NATIONAL HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's National Heritage Special Award Program. Part of the route goes through the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area administered by the National Park Service. The passport stamp is available at the National Heritage Area headquarters, 180 W. First St.
WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD PROGRAM: This walk qualifies for the letter "Y" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
LETTERBOXING: For those active in Letterboxing there is a box site near the route of this walk.
WEATHER: Check here for weather conditions in Yuma.
SAFETY ALERT: During the hot summer months -- May to September -- the heat may be extreme, 100+ degrees; walk early in the morning and carry plenty of water, and use a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
