TUCSON HISTORIC DOWNTOWN AND UNIVERSITY YEAR-ROUND WALK
2010
DATES: January 1 to December 31, 2010.
AVA EVENT NUMBER: Y321. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.
DIRECTIONS:
From out of town, take Congress Street exit (exit 258) from I-10. Turn east towards the center of downtown. Go approximately 4 blocks on Congress and Broadway to the hotel on your right (south).
From in town, take Broadway/Congress to the hotel.
If it is available, there is free street parking near the hotel. The parking garage next to the hotel is $1 per hour up to $6. If you eat in the hotel restaurant, you can get a “Get Parking Free” token.

PROCEDURE: At the Hotel Registration desk identify yourself as a walker, ask for the "walk box", take out the notebook and follow the instructions.
START/FINISH TIMES:
You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.

AWARD: This year there is no special award ("A" award) for this walk. A nice selection of awards from previous events ("B" awards) will be available. Some of these awards are illustrated on these Tucson year-round events pages.
IVV Credit only is $3.00.
You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.
You may do this walk for one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

ELIGIBILITY: This walk is open to everyone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
CARNEGIE LIBRARIES SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Carnegie Libraries Special Award Program. The walk goes past Tucson's old Carnegie Library.
FORTS OF THE UNITED STATES SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Forts of the United States Special Award Program. The walk goes past the site of the first Fort Lowell (1865).
HONORING LAW ENFORCEMENT SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Honoring Law Enforcement Special Award Program. The walk goes past Tucson's police headquarters.
HILLSIDE LETTERS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Hillside Letters Special Award Program. The large "A" on Sentinel Peak may easily be seen from the walk.
HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Hooray for Hollywood Special Award Program. The walk goes past Tucson High School where the movie "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987) was filmed.
MUSEUM WALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Museum Walk America Special Award Program. The walk goes past the Arizona State Museum, the Arizona Historical Society Museum, and the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum.
WALKING AMERICA'S ARTISTIC HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking America's Artistic Heritage Special Award Program. The walk goes past the Tucson Museum of Art and four community performing arts theaters and centers.
NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Native American Culture Special Award Program. The walk goes past the Arizona State Museum, an anthropological museum dedicated entirely to Native American Culture.
FIREHOUSES SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking America's Fire Houses Special Award Program. The walk goes past the Tucson Fire Department's downtown firehouse.
VETERAN MEMORIALS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Veteran Memorials Special Award Program. The walk goes past the statue of Brigadier General John C. Greenway, a veteran of World War I. It also goes by the USS Arizona Memorial which has replica "dog tags" for each of the sailors who died on December 7, 1941. It also goes by the Berger Memorial Fountain which has a list of University of Arizona students that died in World War I.
AMERICA'S HISTORIC CHURCHES SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's America's Historic Churches Special Award Program. The historic St. Augustine Cathedral may bee seen along the walk. The site of an older St. Augustine Church may be seen along the walk and the ornate arched portal from that church is now attached to the front of the Arizona Historical Society Museum which is along the walk.
RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. The walk goes past the historic restored Southern Pacific Railroad train station and the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum (a railroad museum).
COLLEGE CAMPUS WALK SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's College Campus Walk Special Award Program. The walk goes through the campus of the University of Arizona.
WALKING COURTHOUSES IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking Courthouses in the USA Special Award Program. The walk goes by the old historic federal courthouse and the old and new county courthouses.
WINERY & BREWERY USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the Winery & Brewery USA Special Award Program. It goes by Gentle Ben's Brewing Company.
AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the books Yesterday's Tucson To-Day, by Harry and Mary Cuming, 1994; From Cowtown to Desert Metropolis, by Roy P. Drachman, 1999; Greetings from Tucson: A Postcard History of the Old Pueblo, by Michelle B. Graye, 2004; and Tucson: The Life and Times of an American City, by C. L. Sonnichsen, 1982.
WORLD LIBRARY CHALLENGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the World Library Challenge Special Award Program. It goes by an old Carnegie Library building, the Main Tucson Library, and an old University of Arizona Library building.
WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "T" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
LETTERBOXING: For those active in Letterboxing there is a box site very near the route of this walk.
