TUBAC YEAR-ROUND WALK

DATES: January 1 to December 31, 2008.
AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y1103. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.
DIRECTIONS TO REGISTRATION LOCATION:
PROCEDURE: At the Hotel Registration desk identify yourself as a walker. Ask for the registration box, take out the notebook and follow the instructions.

START/FINISH LOCATION & DIRECTIONS: It is a 20-mile drive to the Start Point. Leave parking lot of Inn, turn left on Esperanza and take right turn onto I-19 South. Drive 20 miles south on I-19 to second exit for Tubac, Exit #34. Turn left at bottom of ramp – sign for Presidio State Historic Park. Turn left again at next stop sign. Turn right on Plaza Rd. into Tubac. Immediately turn right onto Tubac Road. Stay on Tubac Road – follow signs into parking lot designated for Anza Trail Head and park there. Public restrooms are off Will Rogers Lane – ½ block back on Tubac road to the right – blue sign- restroom in the square to the left.
START/FINISH TIMES:
You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is very little shade along some parts of the route.

DISTANCE: 10 km.
TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Tubac is known as the place "Where Art and History Meet". The walk will take you along parts of the Anza National Historic Trail along the Santa Cruz River, a route taken by Juan Bautista de Anza from Mexico City to California in 1775. Also included on this walk are the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, a unique Southwest cemetery, many historic buildings, art galleries, shops, and restaurants of fascinating Tubac. This walk is rated 2+. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
WATER & RESTROOMS: Restrooms are available at two locations along the trail. During the hot summer months when temperatures may be 100 degrees plus, it is advisable to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.
AWARD: There is no special award ("A" award) for this walk. A nice selection of awards from previous events ("B" awards) will be available. Some are illustrated on these Tucson year-round events pages.

IVV Credit only is $3.00.
You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.
You may do this walk for one additional time the same day at no additional charge.
RIVERWALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RiverWalk America Special Award Program. The route of the walk is partially along the Santa Cruz River.
WALKING STATE PARKS IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking State Parks in the USA Special Award Program. A part of the route goes through the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park.
SPIRIT OF WALKING CEMETERY STROLL SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Spirit of Walking Cemetery Stroll Special Award Program. The route of the walk goes through the historic Tubac Cemetery.
NATIONAL HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's National Heritage Special Award Program. The route of the walk is partially along the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail administered by the National Park Service. The passport stamp is available at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park visitor center.
AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the books A Pictorial History; Tubac: Where Art and History Meet, by Mark Bollin and Mary Bingham, 2006; and They Lived in Tubac, by Elizabeth R. Brownell, 1986.
WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "T" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
