DIRECTIONS:

From I-10 eastbound, take Loop 202 eastbound to Scottsdale Rd. (exit 7). Turn right (south) and the Best Western is on your right.

From I-10 westbound, take State Highway 143 (exit 152 - Sky Harbor Airport) north to Loop 202. Take Loop 202 eastbound to Scottsdale Rd. (exit 7). Turn right (south) and the Best western is on your right.

PROCEDURE: Ask for the walk box at the registration desk. Take out the folder and follow the instructions.

START/FINISH TIMES: Wear sunglasses! You may participate in this walk any day of the week between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is only a little shade along the walk.

DISTANCE: 10 km.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: This is an easy flat urban walk using local street sidewalks and paved walkways. The walk goes through Arizona State University, along historic downtown Tempe's Mill Avenue (featuring a variety of shops and restaurants), past the historic restored railroad station, and ends up along the Salt River and Tempe Town Lake, with views of the mountains surrounding Phoenix, the Valley of the Sun. Trail rating: 1 (1 is easiest and 5 is the most difficult). Suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and restrooms are available at the Start/Finish Point and several places along the trail. You are strongly advised to carry your own water. During the hot summer months when temperatures may be 100 degrees plus, it is advisable to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is only a little shade along the route.

REGISTRATION FEES:

B-Award & IVV Credit is $4.00.

IVV Credit only is $3.00.

You may walk for free if credit is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.

You may do this walk one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. It goes past the restored Southern Pacific RR train station, past the old steel truss railroad bridge which goes over the Salt River, and on a portion of an abandoned railbed.

RIVERWALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RiverWalk America Special Award Program. Part of the route goes along and crosses the Salt River.

COLLEGE CAMPUS WALK SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's College Campus Walk Special Award Program. The walk goes through the campus of Arizona State University.

WINERY & BREWERY USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the Winery & Brewery USA Special Award Program. The walk goes by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Co.

AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes some of the sites mentioned in the books Tempe: A Portrait in Color, by Michel F. Sarda, 1993; Tempe, Arizona Crossroads: An Illustrated History, by Dean Smith, 1990; A Brief History of Tempe, Arizona, by Scott Solliday, 1997; and Arizona State University, Off the Record, by College Prowler, 2007.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "T" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
