TUCSON - SANTA CRUZ RIVER YEAR-ROUND WALK

AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y0712. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.

DIRECTIONS:

From out of town, take Congress Street exit (exit 258) from I-10. Turn east towards the center of downtown. Go approximately 4 blocks on Congress and Broadway to the hotel on your right (south).

From in town, take Broadway/Congress to the hotel.

If it is available, there is free street parking near the hotel. The parking garage next to the hotel is $1 per hour up to $6. If you eat in the hotel restaurant, you can get a “Get Parking Free” token.

PROCEDURE: At the Hotel Registration desk identify yourself as a walker, ask for the "walk box", take out the notebook and follow the instructions.

START/FINISH TIMES: Wear sunglasses! You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: This walk, rated 1 (1 is easiest and 5 is the most difficult), is primarily in a "linear" park that stretches along the banks of the Santa Cruz River in the heart of Tucson. The river park lets you feel you have left the city. The route is lined with a nice variety of Sonoran Desert trees such as Arizona Ash, Desert Willow, Mesquite, and Palo Verde, and other desert shrubs. During the Fall and Spring, there are many flowering plants along the popular, paved path. This walk is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and restrooms are available at one location along the trail and at businesses next to the trail. During the hot summer months when temperatures may be 100 degrees plus, it is advisable to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.

AWARD: There is no special award ("A" award) for this walk. A nice selection of awards from previous events ("B" awards) will be available. Some of these awards are illustrated on these Tucson year-round events pages.

REGISTRATION FEES:

An interesting assortment of medals and patches for previous events ("B" awards) depicting desert flora and fauna and historic sites is available. "B" award and IVV credit is $4.00.

IVV Credit only is $3.00.

You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.

You may do this walk for one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

ELIGIBILITY: This walk is open to everyone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

RIVERWALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RiverWalk America Special Award Program. The route of the walk is almost entirely along the Santa Cruz River.

RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. The walk goes past the restored El Paso and Southwestern Railroad train depot/station ( 419 W. Congress St.) completed in 1913, now serving as a restaurant and office building.

WALKING COURTHOUSES IN THE USA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Walking Courthouses in the USA Special Award Program. The route goes by the new federal courthouse and the new county courthouse.

AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes some of the sites mentioned in the books Los Tucsonensis, by Thomas E. Sheridan, 1986; Rainfall and Runoff in the Upper Santa Cruz River Drainage Basin, by Harold C. Schwalen, 1942; and Yesterday's Tucson To-Day, by Harry and Mary Cuming, 1994.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "T" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.

LETTERBOXING: For those active in Letterboxing there is a box site very near the route of this walk.
