Mt. Lemmon, Arizona, 10 Km. Walk

 

DATE: Saturday, June 14, 2008.

AVA EVENT NUMBER: 80712. One event.

START/FINISH LOCATION: Right in the middle of cool, refreshing, quaint, downtown Summerhaven. We will be just a little downhill from the new Community Center across the street from the Mt. Lemmon Cafe.

DIRECTIONS: Take Catalina Highway all the way up to Mt. Lemmon. When the road divides between Summerhaven and Ski Area, turn left to Summerhaven.

From out of town, take the Houghton Road exit off I-10 (Exit 275) all the way to Catalina Highway, then up the mountain to Summerhaven

START/FINISH TIME: Start: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Everyone must finish by 3:00 p.m.

WALK DISTANCE: 10 km.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The 10 Km route will be on some paved streets in Summerhaven and on Forest Service Trails. The elevation at the start is 8,200 ft. Trail rating: 4 to 5. Shorter routes (5km) are available for those who desire one -- trail rating: 2+.

REGISTRATION LOCATION: Same as the Start/Finish point.

REGISTRATION TIME: Day of the event, between 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

EVENT AWARD: The special award ("A" award) for this event will be a ceramic tile depicting a Penstemon flower. There will also be a nice selection of awards from previous events ("B" awards) will be available.

This event will be held regardless of weather conditions. There will be no refund for those not showing up or not completing the events.

ELIGIBILITY: Everyone is eligible. Children under 12 must bring an adult. Pets must be on a leash at all times and controlled.

WATER/RESTROOMS/: Water and restrooms are available only at the start. It is strongly recommended that you carry your own water.

FOOD: Food is available from restaurants in the area. There are picnic grounds in the area.

National Forest Service Fees: A fee of $5 per car is charged by the NFS at the base of the highway. No fee is required for non-stop travel to Summerhaven. The fee is required for scenic stops and picnic areas.

The walk and the drive to the walk go by some of the sites mentioned in the book Squeezing the Lemmon: a Rock Climber's Guide to the Mt. Lemmon Highway, Tucson, Arizona, by Eric Fazio-Rhicard, 1991.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk is in Mt. Lemmon, Arizona, and qualifies for the letter "M" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
