GREEN VALLEY YEAR-ROUND WALK

DATES: January 1 to December 31, 2008.

AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y1098. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.

DIRECTIONS:

Very Hot in Summer!

: Traveling south on I-19 take Exit 65 and turn right. Then immediately turn right again into Plaza de Esperanza. Drive through the parking lot to the very back where the motel is located. Traveling north on I-19 take exit 65 and turn left under the overpass then turn right into Plaza de Esperanza.

PROCEDURE: At the Hotel Registration desk identify yourself as a walker. Ask for the registration box, take out the notebook and follow the instructions.

START/FINISH TIMES: You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is very little shade along most of the route.

DISTANCE: 11 km.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: The route passes through various residential neighborhoods of this retirement community, with beautiful views of the Santa Rita Mountains. Along the walk there are various examples of typical Sonoran Desert vegetation including many types of cacti and other plants. Except for one short area, the walk is on paved sidewalks. It is recommended that you walk very early in the morning from April through September. This walk is rated 1+. It is suitable for strollers.

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and restrooms are available at various business locations along the trail. During the hot summer months when temperatures may be 100 degrees plus, it is advisable to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat.

AWARD: There is no special award ("A" award) for this walk.

REGISTRATION FEES:

An interesting assortment of medals and patches for previous events ("B" awards) depicting desert flora and fauna and historic sites is available. "B" award and IVV credit is $4.00.

IVV Credit only is $3.00.

You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.

You may do this walk for one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the book Green Valley, Arizona, by Philip Goorian, 2002.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "G" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
