DATES: January 1 to December 31, 2008
AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y1376. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk. Note: there are two 10 km. trail options; however, only one event credit.
DIRECTIONS:
From I-17: Continue north under I-40 on Milton Rd./Hwy 89A to Exit 341; then the same as above.
PROCEDURE: In the Lobby look or ask for the Walk Registration box and follow the directions.
START/FINISH LOCATION: The walk begins at Yavapai Point in the Grand Canyon National Park which is an 80+-mile drive northwest of the Ramada Limited Suites. Driving directions to the park are given with the walk directions which are available below, and, at the Regiatration Location. There is an entrance fee (currently it is $20 if you do not have a Park Pass) to enter the National Park.

NOTE: ENTRANCE FEE: there is currently a $20.00 per car fee to enter the national park. Annual passes are also available.
START/FINISH TIMES: 
You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry water and wear sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
DISTANCE: 10 km.

The East Trail Option goes along the East Rim Trail which is paved for about two thirds of the route. The other third of the route is on a rocky forest trail. It starts at Yavapai Point and follows along the edge of the Grand Canyon through more natural and undeveloped rim forest. The turnaround is at the South Kaibab Trailhead which offers another fantastic view of the canyon. The trail rating for this option is 3; the trail is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

A variety of animals and plants characteristic of the open forests of the Coconino Plateau may be seen along the walk. Some of the animals you may encounter include: mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, Abert squirrel, rock squirrel, and southern plateau lizard. Some of the birds you may see include: raven, nuthatch, mountain chickadee, pinyon jay, Steller's jay, white-throated swifts, and violet-green swallows. The forest consists mainly of ponderosa pine, pinyon pine, Utah juniper, and scrub oak. Other plant you may see include: cliff rose, banana yucca, Utah agave, dwarf mistletoe, and hedgehog cactus.

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and restrooms are available at the Start/Finish Point and at several other locations along the trail. During the hot summer months it is
advisable to carry water and wear sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
AWARD: There is no special award ("A" Award) for this event. An interesting assortment of medals and patches from previous events, "B" awards, depicting desert flora and fauna and historic sites is available.
IVV Credit only is $3.00.
You may walk for free if credit or award is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.
You may do this walk one additional time the same day at no additional charge.
NATIONAL HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk is in a national park and qualifies for AVA's National Heritage Special Award Program.
RIVERWALK AMERICA SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RiverWalk America Special Award Program. The route goes along the rim of the Grand Canyon formed by the Colorado River and the river may be seen from several locations along the walk.
AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes many of the sites mentioned in the books Grand Canyon: The Complete Guide, by James Kaiser, 2006; The Grand Canyon Handbook: An Insider's Guide to the Park, by Susan Frank & Phil Frank, 2000; and Visiting the Grand Canyon: Views of Early Tourism, by Linda L. Stampoulos, 2004.
WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "G" for AVA's Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
