AVA EVENT NUMBER: 2008/Y1196. One event. Note: you may receive IVV event credit twice each year for this walk. You can obtain event credit the first six months and again the last six months of the year. You may receive IVV distance credit every time you do the walk.

DIRECTIONS:

From Tucson take I-10 to I-19 and go south on I-19 to exit 99. Go west on Ajo Way / State Highway 86 to Why. Turn right (northwest) on State Highway 85 and go to Ajo. The Chamber of Commerce is located on the left (west) side of the highway just before the railroad tracks.

From Phoenix / Central Arizona take I-10 to exit 112. Go south on State Highway 85 to Gila Bend. Go through Gila Bend and continue south on State Highway 85 to Ajo. The Chamber of Commerce is located on the southeast side of town on the right (west) side of the highway just after the railroad tracks.

PROCEDURE: The registration box is outside the front door of the Chamber of Commerce building. Take out the notebook and follow the instructions.

START/FINISH TIMES: Wear sunglasses! You may participate in this walk any day of the year between sunup and sundown. During the hot summer months - when it is over 100 degrees! - it is advisable to do this walk in the early morning, and to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is only a little shade along the walk.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Ajo is a quaint, sleepy, former copper-mining town nestled in some Sonoran Desert hills in a fairly remote area of southwestern Arizona. This 10 km. walk is entirely on paved streets and sidewalks in the town. It will take you past historic buildings, museums, parks, a pioneer cemetery, a large open-pit copper mine, and typical Sonoran Desert habitat including large Saguaro and Organ Pipe Cacti. Trail rating: 1 to 2 (1 is easiest and 5 is the most difficult).

WATER & RESTROOMS: Water and restrooms are available at the Start/Finish Point and several places along the trail. You are strongly advised to carry your own water. During the hot summer months when temperatures may be 100 degrees plus, it is advisable to carry 1 to 2 quarts of water and wear sunglasses and a hat. There is only a little shade along the route.

REGISTRATION FEES:

IVV Credit is $3.00.

You may walk for free if credit is not desired, but you must register and complete a start card.

You may do this walk one additional time the same day at no additional charge.

RAILROAD HERITAGE SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's RailRoad Heritage Special Award Program. The walk goes past depot and other buildings of the historic Tucson, Cornelia, and Gila Bend Railroad, and crosses the abandoned railroad bed several times.

SPIRIT OF WALKING CEMETERY STROLL SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's Spirit of Walking Cemetery Stroll Special Award Program. The route of the walk goes through the Ajo Cemetery.

AMERICAN AUTHORS AND LITERARY LANDMARKS SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for AVA's American Authors and Literary Landmarks Special Award Program. The walk passes some of the sites mentioned in the books Ajo, Arizona, by Forrest R. Rickard, 1996; and Ajo, Arizona: The People & the Legends, by Charles J. Gaetjens, 1995.

WALKING THE USA, A - Z SPECIAL AWARD: This walk qualifies for the letter "A" for AVA's new Walking the USA, A - Z Special Award Program.
