Byers Canyon, Colorado

September 2004

Byers Canyon is short, but scenic canyon, along the Colrado River, just west of Hot Springs[might be Idaho Springs, CO], Co, west of Winter Park, but east of Kremling. In addition to the US 40 highway that travels along the southern side of the canyon, the former Denver, and Rio Grande Western Moffat line (now a Union Pacific property) railroad mainline traverses the northern side of the canyon.

The photos shown here were taken on 18 September 2004, with a conventional camera. I remember that fact quite well, as I dropped my girlfriend's digital camera, while changing locations, and didn't realize it, until 20 minutes later. Fortunately, when we returned to the site, to search for it, it was sitting in plain site, without any damage.

1.2.

1. Amtrak's westbound California Zypher rounding the curve, beginning its brief, but scenic passage through byers canyon. This shot was taken from a wide spot in the road, adjacent to US 40.

2. View of Amtrak's Westbound California Zypher passing through the canyon, west of photo #1.

3.4.

3. Following the CZ(California Zypher) was a UP(Union Pacific) freight train. Here is a shot of a portion of the freight's power, rounding a curve, nearing the western edge(perhaps) of the canyon.

4. View of UP general merchandise train curving through byers canyon. If I hadn't dropped my girlfriend's camera, unexpectedly, and been forced to go back to look for it, I don't think we'd have seen this train traversing the canyon.

I wouldn't try climbing down into the canyon for several reasons: 1)the view from the road's pullouts are generally pretty good, 2)loose rocks, and 3)snakes. Any more questions?
