A new release of the EasyLog Utilities module ver 5.0.0.15 was made recently. It added the function of reinstalling the BDE (Boreland Database Engine). This along with some DLL files is the means that EasyLog uses to access the data in your log files.

The BDE is a shared resource that can be used and modified by Windows applications. There have been some problems reported that came up when other applications that also use the BDE have been installed after EasyLog was installed. Some applications apparently do not respect the rules for using the BDE and have modified it in a way that causes EasyLog not to function properly. The Reinstall BDE function will restore the proper operation of EasyLog in that case.

This release is available to all EasyLog users whether their support is current or not. There is an explanation of what this new function does and how to download it on EasyLog Wiki (www.easylog.com/wiki). Scroll down to the Utilities section and click on the link named Beta2. Prior to earlier this evening when I translated them, the instructions and explanation were only available in Italian. I encourage everyone to read this and download the new Utility module. Even though the link indicates a Beta version, the version available there is exactly the same as the one in the latest build of EasyLog 5. Users who have their support current may download this software from the URA and will find the explanation and instructions for use on EasyLog Wiki.

Three of the databases used by EasyLog 5 have just been updated. Those databases are available through the EasyLog Wiki main page at www.easylog.com/wiki. Those data bases are:

Check - the database that allows EasyLog 5 to determine the DXCC entity based on the call sign

Custom - the database of installable custom awards

Please read the installation instructions carefully. Backup your logs before any of the installations. This is the only way to recover in the unlikely event that something should go wrong during an installation.

Recently, QRZ.com made changes to their website that caused the information lookup from EasyLog 5 to stop working. This has been fixed by release of a new dll file that works with the new changes there. For those of you who have EasyLog 5 version 5.2.0.6 or later, you can download a new dll file from Easylog Wiki. Download this file to your installation folder for EasyLog 5 and you should again be able to access data from QRZ.com. The main page for EasyLog Wiki is www.easylog.com/wiki. There you will find a link named "Download New QRZcom.dll - 11 December 2008. Download this file into your folder where you installed EasyLog 5.

As of today, December 13, 2008, there have been new updates for the QSL manager database and the Check file that is used to determine the DXCC entity from call signs. There is a new maintenance release of EasyLog 5, ver 5.6.0.4. This version fixes a couple of minor problems that showed up after the prior release. It is available for download in the User Reserved Area of www.easylog.com for those users whose support is still current. For other registered users who do not have their support current, check my web site for ordering an update CD.

Also, I just received word that the Manager database and the DXCC update utility have been updated and are available on EasyLog Wiki (www.easylog.com/wiki) and are available free to all EasyLog users.

Please make sure you backup your logs before making any updates. This is the only way to recover in the unlikely event that something should go wrong.

September 25, 2008

EasyLog 5 ver 5.6.0.0 has been released. There are several new features including the addition of a RTTY window using MTTY as the RTTY engine. For those who have their support still active, this new release can be downloaded from the User Reserved Area. Be sure to also download a new key file. If your support is not current, you can renew it on my web site or order an update CD there. Your support does not have to be current to order the CD, but you must be a registered user of EasyLog 5. See my site for details.

The zipped download file and the CD contain release notes which tell what has been added or fixed. It also contains instructions for the download, installation and configuration of MTTY for use with EasyLog 5. Release notes did not get added to EasyLog Wiki. I have uploaded the release notes as a PDF file to the FILES area of both the Yahoo EasyLog 5 Users Group and the Google EasyLog Newsletter English Group.

I also want to remind you that the DXCC update utility and the QSL manager database are updated monthly and made available free on EasyLog Wiki (www.easylog.com/wiki) to any EasyLog 5 user.

August 14, 2008

I am leaving in the morning (August 15, 2008) for a two week out of state trip. I will have my notebook with me and should be able to check my email once per day.

July 25, 2008

There are new releases of the Check file and the QSL Manager database on EasyLog Wiki www.easylog.com/wiki. These are available to anyone who is an EasyLog 5 user. The check file is the file that is used to determine the DXCC entity from the call sign and you can get it by clicking on the "Check Download Page" link on the main page of EasyLog Wiki. The manager database can be obtained by clicking on the "Manager Update Page" link on the main page of EasyLog Wiki. Instructions for installation are given there as well.

As always, please backup your logs before you install either of these updates. That is the only way to recover should something go wrong in the installation.

May 2, 2008

Another free service, available to all EasyLog users, has been added to EasyLog Wiki. This service is an update to the custom awards for EasyLog. Awards are gradually being added to the set of custom awards that can be installed in EasyLog logs. There are now over 120 awards that can be installed in addition to the automatically tracked awards. The current set is now available at www.easylog.com/wiki. On the main page, look for the Awards Update Page link. Then select either the English or Italian language page for your updates.

Two files are available. The first is named custom.zip. This file contains the prototype awards files for the awards that are installable. It also contains a PDF file the gives the custom award file name and the full name of the award. Unzip this file and copy its contents into the EL5Awards folder of your EL5 installation. This will update all the existing custom awards and will also add the new ones.

The second file that is available is update.exe. This file name is update.zip. This file contains the executable file named update.exe that can be used to update the contents of custom awards that you have already installed in an EasyLog log. It also contains a file with the instructions for use of the executable and a list of the error codes. If you get an error code other than the one that says a custom award is not installed in your log, it is because there is a structure difference between the old one and the new one. In this case, the update will not be done because to do so would cause you to lose the award information you have so carefully gathered.

For all users, regardless of their support status, a custom awards update will be posted on EasyLog Wiki once per year.

For those whose support status and access to the User Reserved Area is current, newly added awards will be made downloadable as soon as they are available.

Please look also at the DXCC update utility and the QSL Manager update utilities that are also available free on EasyLog Wiki.

There are several items that have happened while I have been severly distracted by volunteering for a charity Christmas program that provides Christmas presents for indigent children. Please accept my appologies for these notices being late.

1) Manager Database updates are now available both on the EasyLog Wiki site and the User Reserved Area (URA). Updates are available monthly on the EasyLog Wiki site for anyone who has purchased EasyLog 5. November 9, 2007

There is a new release of EasyLog 5 available to those users whose support is up to date. It is available in the User Reserved Area (URA) of www.easylog.com/eng. To read the release notes, go to www.easylog.com/wiki and click on the link to the English page for EasyLog Wiki. Then click on the link "EasyLog 5.5.0.4 English". This release is a maintenance release that solves some problems that were in the original of release version 5.5.0.0.

Be sure to back up all your logs before you install the new release. Be sure to download a new key file after you have downloaded the new modules or the full build. If you fail to do so, you will not be able to get the new software to run. You can either download the full build or the individual modules that have been updated. If you download the individual modules for EL5 and QSLWizard, be advised that they are installation files and you must exectute the files to install the new modules. You do not have to download a new key file until you have downloade both of the updated modules. If you download the full build, you must unzip it and execute the install.exe file.

There are also updates to the DX Manager database available there as well. Please click on the link "How to install the Manager updates" to get the full instructions for installing the new DX Manager data base.

Among the important updates to this release are support of the ARRL Logbook of the World and a restoration of the ability to access the QRZ.com database from within EasyLog 5. There have been some other new features added and several bug fixed incorporated. One interesting new feature is plotting DX Spots from DX Clusters on the DX world map as straight lines between the reporting station's location and the location of the DX reported. This makes an interesting display of current propagation conditions.

I will again be traveling out of state beginning September 5, 2007 and returning September 11, 2007. My ability to connect to the internet while I am gone is unknown at this time. I will just have to see when I have the chance each evening. If I can connect, I will be able to answer email. If not, ALL email will be answered when I return. I will be unable to fill orders until I return, but I will fill any that come in at that time.

January 11, 2007

There is another DXCC Update Utility available. You can download it from the main page of the English side of the site (www.easylog.com/eng) or from the User Reserved Area. This one deals with some internal issues generated because the Republic of Montenegro did not get its new permanent call prefix as of January 1, 2007.

If you downloaded the previous DXCC Update Utility prior to January 5 and discovered that it did not make the country recognition algorithm correctly identify the country for 1A4A, this new update utility will do that also. My appologies to those who had this situation. This time I downloaded and tested the utility before adding this news item.

July 24, 2006

I am back from my out of state trip.

I continue to receive bounced emails that I did not send. Some person or persons are spoofing my email. Every one of the bounced emails contains a virus of some kind. Please do not open any attachments in emails from my address unless I have told you I will be sending an email with an attachment.

July 14, 2006

I will be leaving for an out of state trip tomorrow, July 15, 2006. I will be returning to Dallas on Sunday, July 23, 2006. I will be taking my notebook computer and will have internet access. However, I probably will only be able to check and answer my emails once per day. Unfortunately, for four or five of those days, I will only have a dialup connection that probably will not exceed 24 kbaud. I will try to respond to your needs as best I can under those circumstances. I will have the materials available with me to fill any orders that might be placed.

July 13, 2006

Some of the features of the easylog web site have been working and alternately not working. This is because of the "help!" the hosting ISP has been giving. As soon as Microware Software gets something fixed, help comes along from the ISP and it no longer works. Please, if you find something that does not work (such as the Trial version download), revisit the site the next day and try again. Microware Software is working dilligently to get all site problems resolved. We hope to get things working and stable soon.

July 4, 2006

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the EasyLog site www.easylog.com has several parts of it that are not working. The host company moved it to a different system that has different paths and conventions than the original system. The most important thing that is not working at this time is the Trial Download area. The site will ungergo extensive analysis tomorrow. We hope to have this fixed in the next day or two. Please be patient and we will have things back up and running as soon as possible.

March 22, 2006

The telephone number for J. B. Sims Services, LLC is now 903-767-2455. Please restrict calls to the period 9 AM to 9 PM Central time (standard or daylight savings) Monday through Friday and leave a message if I am unable to answer the phone. I will return your call as soon as I can.

The most recent release of EasyLog 5 is version 5.2.0.0.

January 26, 2006

Three entries to the EasyLog FAQ have been added in recend days. You can access the FAQ from the main EasyLog site
www,easylog.com/eng and then click on the EasyLog 5 FAQ link in the Services section of the page.

January 16, 2006

I have added two items to the products page, a Trial version CD and a No CD version of EasyLog 5.

The Trial version CD is available for those who are not comfortable downloading and installing software over the internet and would like to have a CD from which to install the Trial Version. There is no charge for the Trial version software, but I must require $6.00 Shipping and Handling. This CD can be obtained either by mailing your S&H payment to me or by using the PayPal Buy Now button. Texas residents requesting this item are required to pay Sales Tax on the Shipping and Handling.

The No CD version of EasyLog 5 is available for those who are comfortable with downloading and installing software over the Internet. At this time, the process requires manual intervention on my end. If you wish to purchase this way, the price is discounted to $67.20 US. You may make your payment by mailing it to me or by using the PayPal Buy Now button. Using the Buy Now button will be much quicker and does not require you to have a PayPal account. If you wish to purchase EasyLog 5 with no CD, choose that product on the product page and select your method of payment. If you use the PayPal Buy Now button, I will be notified of your purchase and as soon as I get the email from PayPal, I will register you as a customer and provide details of how to download and install the Full Version. There is absolutely no difference between the software you will receive this way and what you would receive if you ordered the Full version CD. If you choose to mail your payment, there will be the delay of the mailing and the payment must clear the banking system before I will send your email telling you how to download and install the Full Version.

It has come to my attention that bogus emails are being sent with return addresses of both my business emails. None of these have been sent by me. I can only assume that unscrupulus person or persons are responsible for these. I suspect that these emails have attachments containing viruses. DO NOT OPEN THESE ATTACHMENTS. Unfortunately, there is nothing that I can do about it. In a genuine email from me, you will be addressed by your name or your Amateur Radio Call Sign. The only attachments I will have will be ZIP or PDF extensions unless I contact you before sending the email. Even these can be scanned by your virus software before you open them.

A new release of EasyLog 5 became available today. The major improvement of this release is the new way of dealing with the security key file. The file will now be downloaded to a folder you specify rather than be sent by email. It no longer needs to be unzipped and copied to the folder where EasyLog 5 is installed.

All existing users are requested to log in to the User Reserved Area and download this new version. The easiest way is to download the full build and then request and download a new key file. Unzip the full build file and execute the install program. Be sure to backup all of your logs before doing the install. You may have to reindex your logs.
