Sexual Reassignment surgery is not the answer for fitting into society. Although most who have it say they would do it again given the option, you can achieve happiness with you body without these effects.
Remember, this is not the only option. With time, you can learn to exist as yourself and free your mind from gender roles and you will not need to bear the pain of these effects.

From The Neo-Vagina Monologues: and other sources, the side effects of having sex change surgery can be viewed in greater depth.
Note: The writer of this material talks about "profound feelings" as a result of the surgery. "People treat me more like a delicate flower," she writers. This yet again illustrates how men are told to feel uncomfortable being weak or delicate. Men have every right to be delicate and weak, despite what society will shove in your face.
Infertility: This is an absolute. You will never, EVER be able to make babies. You might be ok with this. You might not be. You might be ok with it one day and later wish you could create children. Either way, you should think about it.
Destruction of Sexuality: Some transsexuals are no longer able to experience sexual desire, sexual pleasure, or orgasms, and in some cases this is permanent. You might feel disgusted with your sex drive today, but wouldn't it be better to one day come to terms with it than to not have it at all? Click here to go to my section on the sex drive.
Incontinence: Some MtF's are unable to hold their urine after the operation. In some cases, they are never able to hold their urine again.
Risk of Surgical Complication: Something can go wrong, just like any other major surgery. You can have permanent damage done to yourself, or even die.
Extreme Pain: Obviously the operation itself and the recovery is going to hurt, but even post operative, many transsexuals experience a great deal of pain and discomfort.
Regret: According to research in the book Our Sexuality, somewhere between 90 to 94 percent of transsexuals feel satisfied with the results of the operation. However, you could fall into that unlucky 6-10%. There is a chance that you won't feel satisfied, that you feel you'll have made a huge, irreversible mistake in a moment of despair. In some cases, this can lead to suicide.
Surgery isn't for everyone, and it's not the only way to attain your true identity.
