The Consumer Affairs Office of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has an informative and useful website offering guidance on how to resolve your problems.

It is personally more satisfying to resolve a problem without the aid of an attorney. It may be uneconomical to pursue smaller matters because of the cost of legal counsel.

Tips

In seeking to resolve your dispute with a company, "firm politeness" is a plus. The higher you reach in a company, the more flexibility the company representative will have in resolving your problem. If the solution offered is not acceptable to you, request to speak with or write to a higher level representative. Do take accurate notes of your telephone conversation, including the name and position of the person with whom you are speaking, the time and date of the call, and the substance of your conversation. It is best to record your notes as the conversation takes place, or as soon thereafter as possible. In the event you later decide to write a letter or contact an attorney, the notes can be quite helpful.

In some situations, a letter may obtain a better result than a telephone call or email.

When writing a letter, you should state the facts accurately and succinctly, but let the company know its behavior personally affected you. Don't hesitate to request your preferred solution. If your initial contacts don't succeed, be persistent. If the company's behavior is truly horrid, either in causing the original problem or in their attitude to you when you seek assistance, let the company know that you will be contacting state or federal regulators or the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.

You should not threaten the company with legal action or that you will contact the Attorney General unless it is your intention to do so.
