SECOND TIMOTHY
                             Introduction

  I. Time and Place of writing:

     1. From the book itself, indications are that it was written
from Rome, toward the end of Paul's imprisonment, during the
closing days of his life. (See: 4:7,8.) If so, this would be
most likely the year 67 or 68 A.D.

II. The purpose of the epistle:

     1. The letter reflects the apostle's deep concern for Timothy.
Paul was anxious to see Timothy. Bring John Mark with you.

     2. In case Timothy does not arrive before his death, Paul gives
Timothy exhortations as a father would his child at the point
of death. In doing so, Paul instructs Timothy in regard to
        his personal circumstances.

     3. Many of Paul's friends had forsaken him, and Timothy needed
        much encouragement.

     4. In essence, we have the closing thoughts of a concerned
father, faced with imminent death, to his son. If Timothy
arrives in time, this what he would say.

     5. In like manner, the letter is applicable to all Christians in
all times, as we are faced with many of the same problems.
