"Free"
Internet Access Providers
|
In an April 2000 article, entitled: "Hitchin' a Ride", Smart Money Magazine evaluated six "free" Internet service providers. In 2004 there wasn't one truly "free" ISP - all charge something, whether it's a monthly service fee or a "connection fee"...
As I predicted in 2001, the average monthly charge for a dial-up ISP would be between 15 & 20 dollars a month - you can see this today. And yes, you can find a few 10-15 dollar-a-month package deals for seniors if you also subscribe to a long-distance or cell telephone account.
Realistically, though, many Internet users are moving toward the "high-speed" providers, like: Verizon DSL or ComCast Cable. Pricing for the DSL packages has come down to the 30 dollar-a-month range and it's some 6-10 times faster than dial-up. If you compare AOL's $24.95 a month dial-up rate with Verizon's high-speed connection at $30.00 a month, it's a no-brainer - you move up to Verizon. But, don't be fooled. Verizon DSL is available WITHOUT MicroSoft's MSN account...! Ask me how I know... You do NOT have to be an MSN subscriber to get Verizon DSL...! |
