Logic Tail Boom replacement

The tail boom in the Standard logic was always a little weak. Put it in a dive and you had to have a lot of elevator and time for it to recover. For DHL it was way to weak. Rather then digging out the old boom and spending oodles of time trying to align it I ended leaving a little bit of the old boom on and then sliding the new Focus boom on it. By using Pull-pull cables and a slightly shorter tail you shouldn't have to add any significant nose weight.

This was the hardest part! Pull out carbon rods antenna and cut  boom. I kept trimming the boom until it was about 3/4 Long.

Bevel out the inside of the new tapered focus boom or equivalent. Shape end of new boom to fit around trimed fuse area. See the bottom view picture.

Trim back the fuse area so that you can slide the new boom up a little more. Logic_mod_tail_trim.jpg (20602 bytes)

Mix up some epoxy and a little filler and attach. Completed attachment top view Logic_mod_Boom_top_join.jpg (16148 bytes)

After doing some flying I realized that there was some flexing around the rear of the boom. A ripped out the ply plate, made a Kevlar light ply sandwich plate, drilled out some lightening holes and attached with Zap-a-Dap-a-Do Glue. It's the best stuff for this kind of work and is used in the original logic assembly.  I also use a 8/32 blind nut for the rear wing mount  4-23-01

After more flight testing, this time at BASS's ECHLC two day HL contest I found one other weakness. The point at which the play plate ends and the fuse begins. Wrap Kevlar around the ply plate and rear fuse area at least  1.5 inches in each direction.

Work was done as a field repair, black permanent marker used to color kevlar.  5-08-01
