The ayatollah's taunts had underscored the fact
that during the past decade or so, U.S. prestige and influence in the world have declined
sharply, and American self-confidence has slipped in the process(Page 46).
"A Watershed": The embassy siege may help to change that. "In terms of
American power, Iran is a watershed, " said William G. Hyland, formerly senior member
of Henry Kissinger's national security council staff.
It closes the Vietnam syndrome.
" If the plight of the hostages makes Americans more assertive, that will suit
Brezezinski. "I don't belive in playing possum and being acquiescent," he said.
" There is great American power, and you demonstrate it -- but you have to choose
your circumstances. You don't want a Mayaguez just to prove a point."
