Trunked 800MHZ Radio System

The City uses a trunked radio system operating on seven repeaters in the 800MHZ band for all of it's radio commmunicatons. The difference between a trunked radio system and the conventional radio system previously used by the City is in how the frequencies are utilized. In a trunked system, frequencies or "channels" are not assigned to individual departments or services. One channel is used for digital control of the system. The remaining pool of repeaters are shared amoung the users as needed. Therefore, a conversation may start on one frequency and end on a different one. The control channel "tells" the radios when to change frequency in order to follow a particular conversation .

Each channel is a repeater. A repeater receives a low power signal from a radio in the field on one frequency, amplifies it and rebroadcasts it on a different frequency. This allows a low power radio to "talk to" a large area.

The City also utilizes 800MHZ for Mobile Data Terminals (Computers in Police cars)
