The PLANET MARS Earth's Lifeboat? This Page Last Updated : 05 December 2004 19:27
Mars is a fascinating planet! It's typically wrapped in Hollywood hype, but there's much more to the planet Mars than Hollywood usually conveys, or what is commonly known by the average person. After reading a number of books on the subject, I have become a huge proponent of the exploration and evolution of Mars.
I have developed an interest over the years that has been growing slowly but steadily. This interest is the exploration of space and particularly MARS. This is a NEW page that I have just added in April 2004, and I am adding stuff to it occaissionlly, so if the information seems incomplete, then that's because it is! <grin> If there's anything that you would specifically like to know, or have presented, send me an email and I'll see what I can find out and add. By no means, am I an expert--simply a fan of the subject. With my imminent retirement from the Navy looming over the horizon (July 2007), I am faced with finding myself another career. If I can't find me a good paying job that keeps me flying (anything but the airlines), then I will most likely seek something in the aerospace industry. Acquiring a position at NASA would be simply incredible, so I am trying to tailor my education and career to make myself more marketable for such a position.
BACKGROUNDA few years ago, while I was stationed in Maine, I went on a detachment to Jacksonville, FL. I managed to take some time and drive down to the Kennedy Space Center for the first time in a very long time. Throughout the years, I have always maintained a fascination for the space program and the exploration of the cosmos, but it was this trip that re-lit the fire under my interest in the subject. The Columbia sat poised on the launch pad with the service modules cloaking most of her body. Little did I know the fate that would befall her less than a month later. I struck a conversation with a gentleman who explained that it had been years since he had been to KSC. I responded with a similar comment which prompted him to ask me how long. "Well, lets put it this way, when I was here last, the Apollo program was still going on!"
WHY GO TO MARS?There are many reasons to go to mars. Some are political, some are practical.
First of all, let me explain my reasoning for exploring, settling and evolving Mars. It's clear to anyone even mildly in-touch with modern science that we (the human race) is on the verge of using up the vital resources that mother Earth has provided us with. The list is extensive, from global warming, to over-fishing in most of the world's seas, to wide starvation and disease across scores of nations, to fossil fuels eventually dwindling in supply. Of course, there's the population explosion. Assume for argument's sake that the planet Earth is about used-up when it comes to natural resources. What do we do about it. There are so many things that are near irreversible, that we must start practicing alternatives. Naturally, one of the greatest of these that is common to anyone in the Western World, is our dependence on fossil fuels. We absolutely cannot make more. Once its all gone, its gone. End of story. Our only solution to this problem is to research alternative means of propulsion for transportation. Okay, easy enough, right? Sure, solar energy, fuel cells, etc... Population explosion.....hmmm.. tough one. That's one that mother nature tends to solve fo us. New diseases keep constantly evolving and challenging modern science.
MARS DIRECT'Mars Direct' is a plan to put human beings on Mars and to start exploring and inhabiting Mars. It is a concept that Dr. Zubrin developed (though not single-handedly) and presented in his book THE CASE FOR MARS. Here is an outline of his plan: These ideas are not mine , and this is a paraphrasing of Dr. Zubrin's book. If you are interested enough to read this section, then you should read the book. His writing style is not nearly as clinical as you might expect from a 'rocket scientist'. He presents his ideas clearly, concisely, with plenty of scientific data to back up his claims, without too much data. He presnts the reader with some chemistry equations and rudimentary astro-physics (or whatever you want to call it), but provides you with background knowledge to understand any concepts that would require a specialized degree in the field. In other words, if you are a college student or have at least a Bachelor's degree, you will find the book aimed a reading level that is neither above, nor beneath you. What I found amazing, was that he is even able to write in a style that made me laugh a few times. Its somewhat conversational in nature, rather than a textbook.
BOOKS ABOUT MARSFar and away the best book that I have read that explains and supports the best plan to explore and settle Mars--and single-handedly was the catalyst that fed the fire I have for the exploration of Mars: The Case for Mars - By Dr. Robert Zubrin The Case For Mars cites many tidbits of information and sources of the information and draws a striking commonality between Earth a
MOVIES ABOUT MARSHollywood has been increasingly more and more accurate on their rendition of the realitites of Mars and ideas on how to get there and explore. MISSION TO MARS - 2002? 'Mars Direct' is the foundation for the way that the mission is portrayed in this movie. In-fact, the movie is quite accurate, and I believe Dr. Zubrin was a technical consultant for the movie, but I'll have to check that fact before I'm sure. The movie gets a little far-fetched at the end, but what Sci-Fi movie isn't?! I thought the movie was a good, entertaining way of showing what a real-life mission to Mars would be like. I like the idea they come up with to explain the infamous face on Mars. You'll have to see the movie to know. I also like how they used Van Halen's song Dance The Night Away to highlight the one couple dancing in zero-G. RED PLANET - 2003? A little more far-fetched in their approach to exploring Mars, but still used some of the ideas that have been developed recently. The threat of Mars didn't wind up to be unbelievably sensational like I expected, and I liked the movie more than I thought I would. I still like Mission To Mars more, but this isn't bad either. MARS ATTACKS Just pure fun! Totally stupid, but irrestible to laugh at....."Baaaack Baaack!"
