| Mat day
requirements are counted from your last test. Mat days do not accumulate. The concept of a "time bank" does not exist in the USAF (United States Aikido Federation). Be aware of this. It is recommended that you take your next test if your instructor(s) advises you to. On your test, the techniques will not be called out in the same order as below. Also, the examiner may call out techniques not listed on this or any other test sheet. Although the examiner will choose "surprise" techniques you should already be familiar with. |
Omote (oh-moe-tay)
& Ura (ooh-rah) -- respectively, omote describes
moving in front or forward & ura describes moving
behind or in a circle. Uchi & Soto Mawari -- both the inside (uchi) and outside (soto) movements or variations. Henka-waza -- techniques were the nage (thrower) switches from one technique to another technique. Examiner will call the first (or starting) technique. Kaeshi-waza -- counter techniques. Uke (attacker) appies the technique to nage. Then nage counters with the appropriate counter. Original techniques (for uke) will be called by the examiner. (E.g., to apply sankyo against nikkyo). Tsuki -- punch or thrust (with a knife) to the stomach Kata-te-tori -- one hand grab of nage's (defender's) wrist Kata-tori -- one hand grab of nage's collar or neck or shoulder Moro-te-tori -- two hands grabbing one of nage's hands Ryo-te-tori -- both wrists grabbed from the front Shomen-uchi -- strike or punch to nage's forehead Yokomen-uchi -- roundhouse punch or strike to nage's neck or temple For more Aikido/Japanese definitions, go to our glossary page. |
